Loved Ones Asked To Donate To Democratic Cause
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- A South Florida woman who died this week had an unusual last request. Instead of flower or contributions in her name to a charity, she asked those who loved her to try to make sure President George W. Bush is not re-elected.
Loved ones said that Joan Abbey was committed to her political passions, even in death.
Abbey was born in Montreal, but lived for many years in Miami Beach and Aventura. Family and friends came from as far away as Canada and California to remember Abbey at the Mount Nebo Jewish Cemetery in Miami.
Abbey, who was a lifelong Democrat, died Monday -- coincidentally on the first day of the Democratic National Convention.
Her sister, Tillie Shapiro, said, "She was just a caring person She cared about people, and people who were disadvantaged."
Abbey was buried the day after the Democratic convention ended. Her unusual death notice in the Miami Herald said: "You can honor Joan's values by voting against George Bush and contributing to a liberal or Democratic cause."
Abbey's nephew, Martin Shapiro, said, "What she cared most about was improving circumstances in this country... getting rid of George Bush and making this a better country for all people."
Coincidentally, the presiding rabbi, Brett Goldstein, is a registered Democrat but is voting for Bush, and he questioned the timing of Abbey's message at such a sensitive time.
"My contention is that if there's any situation that's sacrosanct, it should be devoid of political ramifications," Goldstein said. "Although people have the opportunity and they can do it if they want to, it is not really appropriate at this time."
Shapiro said, "It was her (Abbey's) essence. It was her core value to try to see this country become a better place and become a more just society. And I think that was the last word she'd want to leave."
Abbey did not want her age known. Many friends said she remained forever young in spirit and staunchly committed to her beliefs.
Normally I would honor someones last wish, but I have to pass on this one.
Obviously suffered from end stage LIBERALISM!!! samey-same
Journalism just doesn't get any better than this.
Journalism just doesn't get any better than this.
Haven't we heard this before? I think an old man died a couple of months ago and said the same thing. Too bad they won't get their wish.
When Bush wins, maybe former senator John Edwards can channel her ghost and help her sue somebody.
All the more to vote for Bush. I'm sure this lady is going to vote for Kerry.
Do a google and see what he did in predicting the latest Canadian elections....
Joan Abby, having passed to the other side, was given a tour of her new home. She was shown a place where she could look into an alternative reality and see what life on earth would be like had all of her wishes come to pass (somewhat like Jimmy Stewart in "It's a Wonderful Life"). She saw in this made-up reality, her wish fulfilled -- the election of John Kerry in Nov. 2004. "Oh!" exclaimed Joan. "It is so wonderful to be able to see your wishes fulfilled! Heaven is such a wonderful place." The angelic being next to her said, "What makes you think this is heaven?...Look! And despair!"
Gonna be harsh: Oh, well, one less Dem on the planet. Rest in peace, lady.
That's a good point. I'd say, from what you say, that most people are Democrats, like most San Franciscans are Giants fans.
It is pathetic. Didn't she wonder what earth would be like in a century, in a thousand or a million years?
Chances are she died of hate. It's a common problem with Dems.
I just did. He was pretty much dead on [predicted Liberals with 135 seats, and the Liberals got 135. Said the Conservatives would get 97, they got 99.] Not too bad I must say. This is, to my knowledge, the second time he has predicted a Bush victory in November.
Just for kicks, what station did you see him on? Was it a local channel or was it something else?
Apparently, she didn't care if terrorists took complete control of the US. Just as long as President Bush is not in office.
(Pathetic and evil woman.)
Oh, man, and Help Was On The Way. ...pity...really...
Addendum: The Conservatives still might end up with 97 seats since I think 2 of their victories are being challenged by the NDP.
Some people need a life even in death!!
It's apparent this woman had no friends. If her dying wish is of a political nature like this, it's pretty pitiful.
A nice guy in our church recently passed away. At the memorial service I wish his friend didn't bring up the fact that the deceased was an avid Kerry fan as it took away from the nice thoughts I had of him for a moment. (I will remember him kindly as I knew him - and not for his political views - which didn't enter into our conversations). One of the things that the deceased regreted was not living long enough to vote for Kerry.
Our Pastor (avid conservative) probably wouldn't have mentioned anything political, but after the friend spoke our pastor said a few words. He mentioned that at the grave-side service there were several things placed on the casket. One of them was a Kerry button. He mentioned that the Democrats are probably glad to hear of such devotion that the deceased would have this button close to his heart. The Republicans were glad to have one less Kerry button visible!
I mentioned to our pastor after the service and in private that I was glad he showed such restraint and didn't say "Well, just being dead hasn't stopped a democrat from voting before". He laughed and said "Chicago- 1960".
