The clearest answer to this stupid and cynical argument by the Democrats is in a telegram that General Douglas MacArthur sent to Congress in the fall of 1945. We had conquored Japan and taken over under the terms of the Surrender documents.

But the Japanese economy was destroyed. Many of the Japanese had their homes burned down. And people were starving. There was the possibility of a hopeless but extremely bloody revolt against the American occupation. In that situation, Congress has balking at sending serious money to Japan to deal with the crises.

MacArthur sent the following telegram:

"Send me food, or send me bullets."

I recall reading that some congresscritters demanded that Mac hang the Emperor. He replied that he would be glad to if Congress would send him a few million more GIs to control the revolution that would follow the hanging.
