My dad, a WWII Coast Guard veteran from the Pacific theater, said this was a badly-executed salute and that only the Commander in Chief is allowed to salute uncovered and out of uniform.

Your dad is right. That pitiful excuse for a salute would have earned him some push-up time in boot camp.

My dad was WWII Coast Guard also, Communications Officer, i.e., telegraph operator. I learned Morse Code when I was a little girl. He set it up in the dining room.

He was in England the week of D-Day and I have the newspapers for the British Newspapers for the days just before. What's interesting is the Daily Crossword Puzzles. A lot of places mentioned.
