HAS SANDY BERGER BEEN CLEARED?

Posted on 07/30/2004 3:19:48 AM PDT by itsinthebag

I just heard on the radio news that Sandy Berger has been cleared of any wrongdoing. Apparently the National Archives is saying that all documents have been accounted for. Has anyone else heard this? And no, this should not be posted under humor! I'm serious, I really did hear this on the morning news just now. WMAL 6:30 here in Washington, D.C., the Fred Gandy Show.

There was an article to this effect in the WSJ, but I think that it was a press release from Berger's lawyer. You have to read it very carefully to get the full meaning. What they said was that he had not withheld any documents from the 9/11 Commission because everything that he was given were photocopies. I am still not sure if that includes all drafts of the documents. There was one small paragraph which stated that he was still under investigation for removing top security documents from the federal archives. Basicly, this is a smokescreen, meant to help Kerry.

I should add that it sounds as if those "replaced" documents are what the 911 commission finally reviewed.

Here's another question.

If the originals were always at the Clinton Presidential Library, why did Berger choose to go to the National Archives?

Why isn't anyone in the media pointing out the enormous opportunity for fraud here?

Paging Woodward and Bernstein...

The MSM has spent the past 30 years trying to relive their Watergate glory days. Here 'tis, fellas. Sorry it just happens to be your side this time, but you do claim to be unbiased. Go gettem.

I read that even the NA "orginals" are copies - the actual originals are in the Clinton library (where apparently security was better?).

This may explain what Berger was doing. The originals at the Clinton Library were already sanitized by someone else working for Clinton at his Liebrary. To make sure that no one discovered this sanitization of the originals, all copies of the originals had to be replaced with copies of the sanitized versions. Berger was then not trying to steal or destroy the originals, he was trying to replace the copies. An enterprising investigator would now be trying to track down all potential copies of the originals that Berger was not able to replace.

I believe I read somewhere that Clarke withheld this document from Ashcroft. If so Ashcroft should be very angry and motiviated to pursue this issue to its full resolution.

It's a whitewash. They say nothing is missing because he took photocopies of documents that they kept the originals of. However, what they fail to deal with is the fact that the photocopies had original marginal notes on them. They are assuming that the ones he stole had no marginal notes on them.

My view is that Washington DC is a subsidiary of the Democratic Party from the highest non-appointed bureaucrat all the way down to the guy who cleans the windows. They are going to back up Kerry no matter how crooked he is. It's the same reason that a Republican can't get a fair trial in Washington DC, but a Democrat can't get convicted. You can also best believe that the Bureau of Labor Statistics has been holding back on the good economic news for the last 3 years, and on the day after Kerry is sworn in, they will suddenly release it.

It's spin.

What records could Berger "withhold"? those wouldn't be the archives documents, if read plainly.

Some people are looking for a reason not to vote Bush.

I already have a pile of reasons. Now it's up to Bush to make the case why he deserves to be reelected. He's going to have to work for it. If he doesn't, he's gone.

Being a big-spending, "free"-pill-pandering, liberal Republican who's supported assaults on the First Amendment just doesn't seem good enough.

Just heard Rush Limbaugh say at the end of his radio program that th story of Sandy Berger being cleared is not true. He didn't have time to develop the story but I think he said more details are on newsmax.com.

My impression of the article was that it was written by Berger's lawyer. The author of the WSJ article is Scott Paltrow, the WSJ phone number is 212 416 2500, call and ask to speak to Scott Paltrow. Ask him if he's been emulating Jayson Blair, or if he would at least make a statement regarding the NewsMax article which denies that the spokesperson at the National Archives ever made such a statement.

What's really hilarious is that Daniel Schorr of NPR just talked about this on "Weakened Sedition." He mentioned the WSJ article, and instead of checking to see if it was true, he stated the clearing of Berger as fact and wondered aloud why no other major media source has mentioned this.

The echo chamber just keeps up the buzz.
