Kennedy and her embarked Carrier Air Wing Seventeen (CVW-17) are on deployment conducting missions in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), and Summer Pulse 2004. Summer Pulse is the deployment of seven carrier strike groups (CSGs), demonstrating the ability of the Navy to provide credible combat capability across the globe, in five theaters with other U.S., allied, and coalition military forces, under its new Fleet Response Plan (FRP). Enterprise and Carrier Air Wing One (CVW-1) are in the Arabian Gulf on a regularly scheduled deployment conducting missions in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and the continued war on terrorism. 040426-N-4308O-035 Aboard USS Barry (DDG 52) Apr. 26,2004 - USS Barry (DDG 52) fires her forward mounted Mk-45/5" 54 cal. lightweight gun. The guided missile destroyer Barry is currently underway participating in a Sink Exercise (SINKEX) involving the decommissioned dock landing ship Portland (LSD 37). Using decommissioned ships for live-fire operations gives ships' crews the experience of launching operational weapons and honing their war-fighting skills.
