A man was arrested in the lobby of a downtown hotel where Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton was speaking after police determined he'd failed to register as a sex offender.
Ransom T. Rowe, 33, of Melrose, Mass., approached security guards at the Boston Park Plaza hotel on Thursday, asking if Clinton was speaking there. He told the guard that he had sent e-mails to the former first lady, now New York's junior senator.
The guard alerted state police, who checked Rowe's records and found an outstanding warrant for failing to enter his name and address with the state's sex offender registry, the Boston Herald reported.
David Procopio, a spokesman for the Suffolk District Attorney's office, said he was prevented by law from disclosing the nature of the offense that led to Rowe being classified as a sex offender.
Rowe pleaded not guilty Thursday and was released on personal recognizance on the condition that he register as a sex offender, Procopio said.
While authorities were initially concerned, they do not believe Rowe posed a threat to Clinton.
"We do not believe he was stalking her," Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley said. "He was apparently interested in seeing her, which certainly in the atmosphere around the (Democratic National Convention), was a concern for us in law enforcement."
There was no phone listing for Ransom T. Rowe in Melrose.

This must be a state law. Since I have a teenaged daughter, I periodically check to see if any sex offenders are registered in my area. The offense is always listed.
