What I Heard At the Democratic Convention
07/28/2004 | carton253

Yesterday evening, I tuned into the Democratic National Convention. I’ve only missed one since I was an itty-bitty republican. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Sean Hannity has been calling this convention – The Reinvention Convention. I heard Ed Gillespie call it Extreme Makeover. They were both right. Personally, I couldn't believe the Democrats would be this reckless. They must know their candidate is in trouble. So, they have to make over John Kerry. They have to reinvent themselves. But they have chosen the character of the Wizard of Oz as their pattern - their role model. Ignore the man behind the record. Look up here at the fierce, scary guy. This is who I am. Hopefully the country will be as smart as Toto!

Two things stand out from last night. The desperate attempt to paint John Kerry as tough on defense and intelligence. The Democrats paraded out a series of high-ranking ex-military men to say that John Kerry will be tougher on terrorists than George W. Bush. Osama Bin Laden and the terrorists must be suffering from night sweats. The military men and women vow that John Kerry has always been tough on national defense. That is a lie. Not only is it a lie, it is an easily refutable lie. This particular canard that the Democrats are desperately selling is a secure as a house of cards in the path of hurricane. It won’t take much for the Republicans or the media (if they ever step up to the plate and actually do their job) to debunk. John Kerry hates the military.

Yes, I know he served in Vietnam. But, what about after he came home? Does he think his treasonous behavior and his record in the Senate is suddenly going to disappear as easily as Dallas’ ninth season did when Bobby Ewing reappeared in the shower. No, it will not. Again, how reckless of the Democrats to think that it will.

The other lie that was consistently brought out was how we went into Iraq alone. Which to John Kerry means that France, Germany, and Belgium did not join us. Heck, Eisenhower couldn’t even get DeGaulle to agree to the D-Day invasion. If the French couldn’t care enough to deliver themselves from Nazi rule, why do we care if they won’t defend themselves against the Muslim invasion that threatens their country and way of life? Just for the record, we are not in Iraq alone. We aren’t in Afghanistan alone. We have a huge contingency of nations with boots on the ground willing and able to help us defeat Islamic Fundamentalism.

On CNN, after John Edwards’ speech, Wolf Blizter, Judy Woodruff, and the fat little man with glasses grilled Ralph Reed about this very fact. Ralph Reed, who we need to see more of, simply laid the facts on the table. Spluttering, the three moved onto another subject. The media knows we aren’t in it alone. In fact, Spain is upset with Australia because Australia called them a bunch of girlie men for running away like little girls because of the Madrid bombing.

Then John Edwards brought up 9/11. Their hypocrisy is overwhelming. President Bush does it and oh, the exploitation of national grief. What was John Edwards’ solution to 9/11? To do everything President Bush has done, but hopefully, with France’s blessing. Who are they kidding?

The most glaring absentee from the night was the WMD issue. Why wasn't it invited to the party? Because John Kerry and John Edwards are both on record as saying that Iraq and their weapons of mass destruction were a threat to the world. They have stated that they saw the same intelligence the President did and came to the same conclusions. If John Kerry hadn’t been so eager to defund, defang, and declaw the CIA, maybe we could have had some unsavory characters in Iraq telling us exactly what Saddam Hussein did with those weapons. Where he sent them or where he has hidden them. But no, John Kerry was too busy dismantling the things he hates the most - our military and the apparatus necessary for our defense.

The second thing I noticed was John Edwards warning to the Republicans not to go negative. Au contraire, Mr. Edwards. Who invented the politics of personal destruction? James Carville? Bill Clinton? But that aside, exposing John Kerry’s record on tax cuts, defense, intelligence, and other issues isn’t going negative. Unlike your presidential candidate, who is fleeing for his life away from his record, President Bush will stand on his. Unlike you, he doesn’t have to pretend the last twenty years haven’t happened. He doesn’t have to worry that a façade made of toilet paper and spit will dissolve the first time a spotlight is shined upon it or it is scrutinized.

What I saw at this convention is a well-orchestrated and well-rehearsed fraud. Their candidate has decided he can fool all the people all the time. It is up to us to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Well, how didn't really come up in the conversation. But, John Edwards sure did talk tough. As did every other fraud they put up on the platform.

From what i saw of Edwards speech it seemed more like a tent revival meeting than anything. There was also a curious absence of any mention of either mans record in the senate.

I appreciate your synopsis. I couldn't bring myself to watch it, I was still hung over from the mass quantities of "adult beverages" that I had to consume to get through some of it on Tues night.

I'm going to TRY to watch J F'n tonight. I've re-stocked the alcohol supply. I still haven't figured out how to keep from screaming LIAR at the TV(as well as other choice words that would get me banned if I typed them) and waking up the kids as well as sending the dog cowering under the couch.

The Daily News, Los Angeles, says he is planning on extending the 9-11 Commission.

Oh, no... they want us all to forget the last twenty years ever happened. According to John Kerry, he was a major player in helping Ronald Reagan win the cold war.

To me this is reckless behavior...

The cold hard truth will pop his balloon...

It only took Ralph Reed a sentence or two to shut up the CNN tribunal... And all Ralph Reed used was the truth.
