Bitter Political Tone Fueled By Entitlement Mentality

WASHINGTON — When John Kerry speaks tonight he may promise, again, to cut corporate taxes and increase the size of the military by 40,000 persons. Both ideas are sensible — and tactical. They are supposed to blunt Republican charges that he stands on one side of a vast ideological chasm separating the parties. Democrats make similar, and similarly silly, charges about this election as the hinge on which American and world history will turn. What is strange about politics today is not just that it is so passionate — particularly on the part of Democrats unhinged by their loathing of George W. Bush — but that the passions seem displaced. They are not merely disproportionate to the parties' policy differences, they seem almost unrelated to those differences.

Doesn't the above quote make it sound like he considers both sides to be mistaken? From the sound of it, I don't think George believes that John Kerry and friends really do stand on one side of a vast ideological chasm.

Will has been inside the beltway too long. I don't consider him a Conservative. I don't (frankly) consider him a Republican. He is, I think, more critical of President Bush and than of Kerry.

Will thinks it's a good thing to be nuanced. His time has passed.

There will be a lot of laughter in the corporate halls tonight.

I have some remaining faith in the common sense of the American people. I could not watch that so called convention. Five-year-olds in grownup bodies...
And that slug Moore. He is truly scary.

George Will is a disgrace.

Reading him is like watching a Lisa Marie Presley concert. One hope to see a glimpse of the "King" in her, but we are only left with a snarling lip, and warbling attempts at melody.

With George, we don't even get the snarling lip!

The tone-setting activists of both parties exemplify an unpleasant product of modern government — the entitlement mentality. They believe not merely that their party deserves to govern because of the superior wisdom of its policies, but that they are entitled to govern because of their moral and intellectual superiority.

Yep. One certainly sees that dynamic here; many folks cease to argue the issues on their merits for that very reason. They evidently feel that since they're superior to liberals they no longer need to think hard about the issues. Sadly, it's evident on both sides.

Oh yes, Woe be to anyone who dares criticize the Holy Lord George W. Bush.

He attacks both parties, but directs most of his barbs at the party that presumes to be for limited government

So, the two parties are acting like an arguing divorced couple, each trying to "out gift" the offspring, ie. electorate, who are playing them for all it's worth. Instead they should encourage the "kids" to be independent.

Unlike some, I have carefully considered the things that confront us as a nation and have come to realize that there is a segment of society which has developed a smug demeanor of superiority born out of fear. Fear that their comfortable way of life might not be maintained, but that as long as their personal peace and affluence is not interrupted everything will be fine. These are the fence riders, the hyaenas, the milquetoasts, the spineless men who lack all conviction. They go by the names, Democrat and Libertarian.

I think you've described the average Board of Trustees and CEO.

Yup, I'd have to agree. Both parties are for the Drug Prescription plan, both are for expanding benefits for Vets, both are for tax credits for the working poor.

Ronald Reagan would never have approved of the Repubs being the party of entitlements.
