Kerry is in trouble, and he knows it. He needs to do something bold and dramatic. Announcing his resignation from the senate would certainly be played up by the media as a bold and "courageous" move (even if it isn't).

The fact is, if Kerry loses, he may not be interested in going back to being an irrelevant backbencher... so resigning could be a no lose proposition.

What say you all?

He should, but he won't.

Interesting move but I'm not sure that I see Kerry as in trouble right now.

No.

Why should he? He has a job he doesn't have to do and still gets paid.

Of course not. He has his meal ticket and won't sacrifice it on the chance he becomes President.

It didn't help Dole and it won't help him. He is a survivor - he won't do it.

Yes, and he'll give you credit for suggesting it.

Did McGovern? Lieberman? LBJ? Even the honorable Lloyd Bentsen or John F. Kennedy?

On the other hand, Dole did. Goldwater was up for re-election and declined to run, so roughly the same thing.

But the pattern here is clear-- Republicans do and Democrats don't. To Liberal Democrats power is everything. Honor is something you do after you are defeated for re-election like write a book, play diplomat or sometimes even do something useful like run a bed & breakfast (McGovern) or build houses for the poor (Carter).

But resign a position when you don't have firm hold on a higher office? When pigs fly.

Dole didn't have the media working 24/7 to spew out positive spin about his resignation.

How many times has a Democrat done the right thing?

Hell will freeze over and monkies will fly out of my butt before that Clymer resigns and gives up his state-sponsored welfare for a no-show job.

He'll announce his resignation before announcing he's staying.

No.

The Massachussetts Governor is a Republican and gets to select a replacement. Although its only a short time, it is a way to get a GOP senator's foot in the door.

Kerry barely won re-election in MA (only 52% of the vote with a GOP candidate to run against, and without a GOP candidate to run against, the Libertarian candidate got 20% of the vote). Kerry is not well liked, even in MA. If a GOPer got even minimal exposure, Kerry would not re-win his seat.

He won't quit, he is a leach on society. That is why he is running as a democrat.

Democrats don't have to do anything honorable. It doesn't matter to the media. It doesn't matter to the pary faithful. Now a Republican would have resigned and if he didn't the media would have forced him to do so.

You do agree that the media would play up a resignation as "bold", "courageous" and "dramatic"?

Right now, the media is falling asleep ... the media will turn on Kerry if he continues to be a predictable bore.

He has gone years without working and is still getting paid - why would he resign with only a few months to go? That would only bring attention to how much he has been slacking off. He wants attention on Bush not on himself. Sounds like you haven't give this much thought.
