BOSTON - Sen. Hillary Clinton boldly put the Republicans on notice yesterday that they will be wasting their time in trying to recruit and finance a GOP opponent for her in 2006."Maybe they'll think better of it, because I'm going to win," said Clinton (D-N.Y.), who ended up coasting by her GOP opponent in 2000, ex-Suffolk County congressman Rick Lazio.
But Clinton has a big, bright bull's-eye on her, the target of a Republican Party bent on defeating her in two years - particularly if President Bush beats Sen. John Kerry this November.
A loss for Kerry would immediately make Clinton the odds-on favorite for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008, but her chances would be hurt if she lost her Senate seat.
Conversely, a Kerry victory over Bush this fall likely would take some of the heat off Clinton in 2006.
Still, Clinton, who raised a record $45 million against Lazio, indicated she knows what she needs to do to keep the historic role she now covets.
"I will raise whatever money I need to raise," she told The Associated Press yesterday.
The Republicans admitted they don't yet have a 2006 opponent for her, but among those most mentioned are former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Rep. Pete King (R-L.I.).
"I think someone will step forward to stop her from using New York as a steppingstone to the White House," said Dan Allen, spokesman for the Republican National Senate Committee.
"Hillary Clinton will see in 2006 that it's easier to talk about winning than actually going out and doing it."

Rudy could have easily beaten her last time, but copped out at the last minute. Whatever other virtues the man holds, this was a despicable action. It didn't give Lazio enough time to gin up the support he needed.
I hope she gets smashed in 2006. The election I mean. I'm sure she gets smashed almost as often as Ted the other way.
What is this, Cuba? She doesn't even think the Republicans have the right to run somebody against her?

The arrogance and elitism from Hillary Rotten....ahem...Clinton is just dripping like crazy throughout this whole article.
We need to be careful here. No one wants to see the Clintons gone from public life more than me, but remember the mistake McAuliffe made in 2002. He put so much time, money and effort into trying to unseat Jeb Bush, just for spite, that he probably lost two or three Senate seats that he could have won.
If Hillary looks vulnerable when the time comes, and we have a good candidate, I say bring it on. But we must be sure we're not pouring money down a 'rat hole, at the expense of other priorities.
The man had cancer, friend.
Personally, I'll cut Rudy some slack for the decision he made.
I'd love to see Rudy punt Hitlary back to that trailer park in Bumf*ck, Arkansas. How the hell the NY'ers voted for her is beyond me. I guess the water really IS tainted in NYC.

By all accounts, she woulda had her clock cleaned by Rudy if he hadn't pulled out for cancer treatment.
She won't have her hubby selling pardons for votes this time around, either.
