A 'new phase' in search

Hacking apartment turned back over to the family By Pat Reavy and Jennifer Dobner Deseret Morning News

The apartment where Mark and Lori Hacking lived is no longer a crime scene and has been turned back over to the family.

Mark Hacking

Lori Hacking

Tuesday, friends and family of the Hackings removed tables, chairs, a dresser, a headboard and other items that were not seized as potential evidence by Salt Lake City police. Scott Hacking, Mark's brother, said cleaning out the apartment was a difficult and somber process. "It's where she lived. It's sacred to us. He's my brother. She's my sister-in-law," he said. "It's very hard." Scott Hacking and others drove off with more than two trailers full of items. The family also took the Hackings' pet cat, Herbie, a red and white calico. Scott Dunaway, spokesman for both Mark's and Lori's families, said the cat hides in the apartment whenever people are around and refuses to come out. Mark Hacking's sister has left a dish of food for Herbie each morning and found it empty at the end of the day. Herbie was a gift from Mark to Lori, according to Scott Hacking. On the same day the Hackings' apartment was cleared out, the family entered what they called a "new phase" in the search effort to find Lori. Volunteers were asked not to show up at the LDS stake center near 100 West and 200 North that has served as the command center almost since the search began. Instead, volunteers are being asked to conduct searches in their own communities and report any findings on the Web site, www.findlori.com. "We're concerned about the places we're going to be focusing on. We think it's going to be risky," Dunaway said. By risky, Dunaway said he meant some searches may be in steep terrain that require people who have climbing experience or other searches may be in dangerous parts of the city. "Communities know their own areas a lot better," said Chris Smart, uncle of Elizabeth Smart who has helped organize many of the search efforts.

I'm hoping she didn't end up in a garbage compactor or something similar. They found some reddish/brownish fluid at the bottom of the dumpster. I'm sure there may be some DNA in that. If not, there will be DNA on the mattress (the old one). What a thing to kill your wife over. Just stand up and take the heat like a man. What kind of young men are being raised anyway???

Subject: Much more to this story...
I happen to live in the neighborhood by U of U and something about this story just doesn't sit well with me anymore... Mark Hacking strikes me as a psycho, but he's a planner and a manipulater and I can't buy that someone with the meticuluousness of Mark, someone who methodically manufactured evidence to support his lies, would force himself to operate on such a tight timeline and make the kind of dimwitted mistakes (paying for the mattress with a credit card - leaving physical evidence in the apartment) he made.
Mark was a planner, not a rage killer. If he was going to kill someone he wouldn't wing it. He'd plan it and do it properly. Unless he was under some external duress... and I highly doubt his wife of five years, would "all of a sudden" force the issue. She was too compliant, it had to be another force driving the action.

OK, keep that point and mind and then ask "What is the one part of the plan that went well?" Answer. The body appears to be gone without a trace. Would Mark have relied on Salt Lake Sanitation to pick up her body from a nearby container? Hell no. This is a guy that understands medical science and DNA evidence. Even in his most extemporaneous moments he knows to get-rid of the body good. At best, Mark maybe had 2-3 three hours to get rid of the body... Even in Utah that's not a lot of time to get out to the middle of nowhere and properly dispose of a body... This all points to one thing - an accomplice.

Which brings me to something I recall a couple months ago. Driving east on 400 S, I ran a traffic signal as it was going yellow to red. Not my ususal driving style, I just got caught in no man's land and had to burn threw it, well I looked in my rearview and saw another vehicle go through it 100 feet after me - they were blowing it hard enough to impact other traffic.

At the next light they pulled next to me on the left. A woman was driving I thought "hmm let's take a look at this chick, another 'hurried woman' idiot driver in SLC."

As I looked over at her, some big dope with a bandana on his head shot me an FU look from the passenger window. I thought "Hey toolbox, nice bandana. Are you a 'blood' or a 'crip' ya joker." (Hey this is how I assess people). The guy was Hacking. I made direct eye contact with him and while I didn't get a good look at the girl she was very light skinned with red or strawberry blonde hair.

Now I have no idea who the girl was, but it wasn't Lori. The car was a dark toyota corolla or nissan sentra Japanese econo-crapbox.

Granted, someone in a car with another person in the middle of the afternoon doesn;t prove anything. But it does lend support to an affair and perhaps an accomplice. Mark and Lori's cross schedules would make a daytime affair very easy for a guy like Mark... But if he found the wrong girl - one with the same sociopath instincts he may have had the screws turned on him.

This story has much much more to come out.

When I was in the hospital for about a week, my wife told me that my cat would just sit around disconsolate, looking for me, meowing, not interested in eating, playing, etc., and not being himself at all.

Our pets become very attached to us.

Here's something I heard on TV: they said no blood had been found on "the" mattress--that is, on his old mattress. They implied that no useful DNA had been found on it.

????

So why get rid of it??? Maybe what they had wasn't really the right mattress??
