A 'new phase' in search

Hacking apartment turned back over to the family By Pat Reavy and Jennifer Dobner Deseret Morning News

The apartment where Mark and Lori Hacking lived is no longer a crime scene and has been turned back over to the family.

Mark Hacking

Lori Hacking

Tuesday, friends and family of the Hackings removed tables, chairs, a dresser, a headboard and other items that were not seized as potential evidence by Salt Lake City police. Scott Hacking, Mark's brother, said cleaning out the apartment was a difficult and somber process. "It's where she lived. It's sacred to us. He's my brother. She's my sister-in-law," he said. "It's very hard." Scott Hacking and others drove off with more than two trailers full of items. The family also took the Hackings' pet cat, Herbie, a red and white calico. Scott Dunaway, spokesman for both Mark's and Lori's families, said the cat hides in the apartment whenever people are around and refuses to come out. Mark Hacking's sister has left a dish of food for Herbie each morning and found it empty at the end of the day. Herbie was a gift from Mark to Lori, according to Scott Hacking. On the same day the Hackings' apartment was cleared out, the family entered what they called a "new phase" in the search effort to find Lori. Volunteers were asked not to show up at the LDS stake center near 100 West and 200 North that has served as the command center almost since the search began. Instead, volunteers are being asked to conduct searches in their own communities and report any findings on the Web site, www.findlori.com. "We're concerned about the places we're going to be focusing on. We think it's going to be risky," Dunaway said. By risky, Dunaway said he meant some searches may be in steep terrain that require people who have climbing experience or other searches may be in dangerous parts of the city. "Communities know their own areas a lot better," said Chris Smart, uncle of Elizabeth Smart who has helped organize many of the search efforts.

The LE must not have found anything at the landfill, this is from the findlori.com site as of 7/27/04:

Specialized Searchers and Equipment Needed With the change in the search focus we are asking specialized searchers with equipment to do intense focused searches. This would include the following types of groups or persons: ATVs, Horseback Riders, Search and Rescue, Dogs, Aircraft, etc.

I'm curious, why is the apartment being emptied of furniture so soon by the family? Was the lease up because the Hackings were supposed to have moved soon? It seems to be an implicit acknowledgment that Lori is dead and Mark's not coming back home...

I remember hearing that they had to get out of the apartment because they had made plans to be next month at med school, and someone else was moving in. So the lease might be expired at the end of July.

Sad, when you think of the level of deception there, isn't it? This woman, letting the lease go, getting ready to move, reportedly getting a phone call at work that her husband wasn't even registered, and there was no housing for them. She went home in tears. It seems nobody saw her again, but her husband.

I usually don't follow these sensational missing woman things, but something about this really tugs at my heart.

Thanks for the info. It's very sad...an amazing level of deception, it appears. The family members seem nice, I've very sorry about what they're going through.

What happened to Berger? Didn't he do something with paper in his pants?

Thanks for the ping, blondee!!

I know this is a small thing, considering what that poor girl must have gone through, but.... that poor cat!!! If I were her family I would treasure that cat, since apparently they can't have Lori back.

Let's see... there were a little over 12 hours btw the time Lori was last seen alive, and the time he bought the mattress and reported her missing. IMO he is the one who killed her. I think he made sure the body was gone b/f moving on to mattress replacement. Therefore, she has to be fairly nearby, since he couldn't have gotten too far--and back--within 12 or less hours.

Not correct. After she received the call at work and went home crying, she and her husband attended a going-away party for her that same evening at the mountain cabin of her super. She appeared in good spirits and photos of her smiling with her husband were taken and have been in the paper.

Don't know what it means, but so we keep the record straight.

She went home in tears. It seems nobody saw her again, but her husband.

There was an employee 'going away' party for her the evening that she left work in tears and all seemed well. There was also a gathering Sunday night when a frien of hers said that all seemed well with Lori.

I don't know when the lease was up but it is known that they were supposed to have moved to NC by now.

They've searched the landfill and most of the nearby areas. What in the world could he have done with her body in such a short period of time? The killing, disposal of the body and cleanup happened within ten or eleven hours. That doesn't seem like much time to me but apparently it was more than enough for him to place her somewhere hard to find.

Oh, they will definitely treasure that cat. My sister died a few months ago and her dog means a lot to us. She took him everywhere with her and was lost and confused looking after she passed away. I often wonder if he is still waiting for her to come back through the door once again.

He could have chopped her in little pieces and into many garbage cans or dumpsters....If that the case will be lucky to retrive even 1 bone....or maybe drove the multi pieces to a spot wild animals would get

I'm wondering if he buried her rather than put her in a dumpster, as the cadaver dogs have not hit on anything yet. That is what I heard on TV today. Hmmmm.. could be really hard to find her if he buried her in the mountains. Lots of area to cover.

I think it was Fox that reported that the "new" manager was supposed to be moving into that apartment. From what I've heard, Mark & Lori were the managers of the apartment building.
