Kerry Snubs Cardinal on DNC Blessing
United Press International
The Democratic Party is asking a Paulist priest instead of the archbishop of Boston to bless its national convention, the Boston Globe reported Monday.
The campaign of Democratic presumptive presidential candidate John Kerry has announced that it has asked the Rev. John B. Ardis, director of the Paulist Center, to deliver the traditional invocation at the four-day national convention beginning Monday night, the Globe said.
Kerry spokesperson Stephanie Cutter told the newspaper that the campaign had not asked the Catholic archbishop of Boston, Cardinal Sean O'Malley to give the blessing. We never reached out to Archbishop O'Malley to deliver the invocation, Cutter said. We are seeking to arrange having (the priest) from the Paulist Center to deliver the invocation since that is John Kerry's home church.
Prominent church leaders over the past 20 years have often either declined to speak to Democratic conventions or delivered controversial invocations at them. The Catholic Church teaches that abortion is never morally acceptable, the Boston Globe said. The proposed Democratic Party platform this year declares 'abortion should be safe, legal and rare.'
Another convention story the major mediots are backpaging or spiking
The proposed Democratic Party platform this year declares 'abortion should be safe, legal and rare.'
I wonder what they define as rare, less than the # of GIS killed in Iraq so far or more along the total # of Innocent Iraqis killed by the Soddomites before the regime change.
Why is this significant? Sorry, maybe I'm just missing something here...
I would venture to say the DNC did not want to deal with the embarrassment of being turned down by O'Malley.
It takes a special kind of "catholic" clergyman to bless the DNC convention, so I guess the Paulists make sense...
God is watching.......
I always want to know why they think it should be "rare." To say nothing of the poor "safety" record of abortion -- if you're a fetus.
What is a Paulist?
It is significant to anyone who believes that integrity and morality counts. two points seriously lacking in the kerry kamp.
Even if you are agnostic or atheist or deist or whatever - the fact that kerry does not even follow what he proclaims to be his own beliefs show him to be no better that a swine.
Well, I'll take a stab at answering that, at least from my perspective.
It is illustrative of the hypocrisy of the Dems. They seek the appearance of Church approval, thus trying to appear as moderates. However, much of their platform and many of their supporters despise the Church and/or the teachings of the Church.
Kerry cannot receive communion since he believes in abortion on demand, so he seeks out a group willing to appease him in spite of the contradiction.
I think one of the themes for this convention will be "DNC, the anti-religion party". This is why Ron Reagan Jr. is there. He is there to attack Bush's religion.
It is a consistent theme with Democrats, their mantral is all religion is stupid.
Because he just thumbed his nose at the Catholics
Paulist Center Ministries & Groups
It's a place for divorced , gay, lesbian and friends, amongst others, to worship and commune with one another and pursue "social justice".
While I am disturbed that a priest from a sect will be blessing the DNC, I am relieved that a true catholic Archbishop will not be put in the position of compromising the church's integrity by tacitly supporting the platform.
