Harvard's Joan Shorenstein Center was the scene Sunday for anchormen to lament the lack of network coverage for this week's convention.
The parties "have to think about how to reconstruct the conventions," said NBC Brokaw.
"They've been drained of all their vitality."
ABC Jennings claimed that "under the current circumstances, there isn't great reason for us to show up," for more than an hour or two a night.
But PBS Lehrer rebuked the big three, according to Monday's BOSTON GLOBE.
"I think that starting tomorrow, we're going to have four of the eight most important days we can have as a nation," said Lehrer, criticizing CBS's Dan Rather, ABC's Peter Jennings, and NBC's Tom Brokaw for not getting more air time. "I'm sorry. You guys are a hell of a lot more important than your bosses are willing to admit."
Addressing the challenges of covering politics in a politically polarized environment, CBS Rather stated that "fear has increased in every newsroom in America," and added that reporting on explosive issues can bring a torrent of e-mails and phone calls. That can lead to a situation, he said, in which journalists conclude that "when you run this story, you're asking for trouble with a capital 'T'. . . Why run it?"
Party conventions have to be among the most stupefyingly boring activities known to man. Only a masochist watches them end to end, and I would seriously worry about the mental stability of anyone who tunes in for the insightful commentary from Brokaw, Jennings, and Lehrer.
You'd think they might just step back and wonder about their agenda, given the goofballs they support, wouldn't ya?...
(Liked your shirt from the JimRob Comes to San Diego thread, BTW)
No...fear that Rather, et.al., no longer have monopolistic control of the flow of information and they simply cannot handle not being the dictators of thought.
One thing I'm EXTREMELY thankful for is Free Republic! Thank God I won't be seeing the JACKASS convention, BUT will be reading the LIVE THREAD right here! For the sake of medical problems, I'll be reading every post with anticipation! ONWARD FREEDOM FIGHTERS!!
That is what I was thinking!
At I have seen them all since Truman.
Let them watch Fox! Borkenjaw, Peter Jerkings and Ratherbiased are whining because they're no longer relevant. Since more people will be watching the Commiecrat Convention on cable anyway, that means that more people will see them make asses out of themselves.
That brings to mind the 1968 Demon-rat Convention in Chicago. I recall books written after that fiasco entitled "SHAKE IT FOR THE WORLD SMARTASS" and "THE WHOLE WORLD IS WATCHING." Fist-salutes, "power to the people," ruckus-raisers and hell-raisers of all types, all of the extreme activists who have since then become entrenched as "fellow travelers," "strange bedfellows," and "comrades-in-arms" within the Democratic Party. Then they dare to depict themselves as "unafraid of inclusiveness." They have a long history of loony thinking and behavior. If I recall, there were also threats to poison the drinking water of Chicago. Should I then say DHIMMICRATS?
I would love to see history repeat and improve upon itself at the Democratic Convention 2004!
The print media people who are going to be in attendance are worried about something more mundane as well. Several Massachusetts newspapers (no, not on page one, they haven't yet sunk that low) reported this on Sunday, July 25. Word has it that there will be only 20 portable restrooms (also known as porta-JOHNS) for the more than 1200 PRINT media reporters who are going to attend. God only knows what the VISUAL media people are going to have to deal with. The convention may very well raise a big stink! ROTFLMAO!!!
I believe CSPAN is going gavel to gavel with its coverage. Why don't they get mentioned?
COME ON GUY-GALS, you're the entertainment! DO SOMETHING! BRIBG IT ON!!!!
Most of these network bigtalkers have walked through a cobweb and they are twisting and swatting to get away. They all know that they don't mean sqwat in today's media world, so their voices are not necessary anymore. It's like me, as a parent of adult children, realizing I can't influence or control my children's lives anymore. It hurts, and I afraid for them, but what can I do?
This upcoming convention is going to be a nightmare for the Dan Rathers of the world. All the nuts are going to be in one bowl and the public will see they are all basically the same.
This is going to be the Wellstone "Memorial" played out over four days. Even The Jersey Girls will run away before it is over. Like Rush Limbaugh said, all your dreams will come true.
Er, BRING...
When does the Dem convention begin, anybody know?
I thought it was supposed to happen in July, but July doesn't have much longer to go.
Thanks.
Weather Channel, ESPN Classics, SciFi (probably closer to reality than the Kerry makeover), ...
You get the picture.
Not to mention ridiculously expensive, and nowadays an increasingly colossal security hassle. And it's nothing but a bunch of preaching to the pom-pom waving, silly hat-wearing converted.
The E train runs right under my office building, three stops away from Madison Square Garden. I'm no more enthusiastic about the Republican convention coming to town than I would be if it was the Democratic convention. Both have about as much significance as the half-time show at a high school ball game. I'll be staying home the day Bush is on, to avoid all the security and transportation hassles and the possibility of a nearby terrorist attack. And I won't be watching on TV -- there are plenty of good opportunities to watch Bush speak on TV, but this won't be one of them.
I've got the Weather Channel on now, but on mute--they were talking about weather for the DNC before.
Somehow, I don't think the RNC is going to get this much coverage...
News flash to Peter-there is never a reason for YOU to show at all, for anything.
