Kerry just flubbed the opening pitch at the Yanks-Sox game
ESPN | 7/25/04 | me

Kerry just 'threw' out the opening pitch at the Boston-Yankees game. Just saw Kerry pitch a really weak opening pitch, well short of the plate, bouncing under the catcher. What a poser!

My question.......why would he use the first pitch at a MLB game as a photo op when he can't throw??

Good question. This was really embarrassing stuff. He sort of pushed the ball instead of threw it, looking like the guy who always got picked last on the playground when it came time to pick teams. So he must know he's an uncoordinated dork. Incredible that he'd be so anxious to showcase it.

He didn't really say that his favorite player was "Manny Ortez," did he? I mean, not only conflating Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz, but spelling Ortiz wrong?!? Too bad his all-time favorite Red Sox player Eddie Yost is no longer with the team---even worse for him, Yost never played for the Red Sox!

It's true, it's true! ;) Here's what sportswriter Peter Gammons had to say about it:

So who puts the bug in candidates' ears about seeming what they are not? John Kerry last week professed to be a big fan of "Manny Ortez," then re-emphasized the phoofery by correcting it to "David Ortez." No, that was Dave (Baby) Cortez and "The Happy Organ." A few years back Kerry went on a Boston station with Eddie Andelman and said "my favorite Red Sox player of all time is The Walking Man, Eddie Yost," who never played for the Red Sox. Kerry is going to sweep New England. He's going to get 70 percent of the vote in Massachusetts. He doesn't have to be a Red Sox fan, all he has to do is not be John Ashcroft.

You are both correct. Heard on talk radio today (boortz, I think) that the soldier was to throw out first pitch. Kerry preempted him. Then after spending 10 minutes seated in the same box with Kerry was escorted by security to the LAST row to finish out the game. This, when fully reported, will backfire on Kerry. We shall see.

There's the rub -- fully reported. Most of the country doesn't even know that he got booed, and that his "surprise" visit wasn't really a surprise, thanks to the media. Heck, most people don't even know that this lifelong Red Sox fan talked about "Manny Ortez" playing for the team! The media will sit on the soldier angle as well -- how will they have time to show prisoners with panties on their heads if they cover this?

Exactly!

He probably was the last guy picked on the playground.......one of the guys that athletic girls got picked well ahead of..........and yet he stood there in front of all those people and looked like a total dweeb.

I wonder if he's embarrassed about it, or if he's so arrogant that he thinks he did a good job........

I remember seeing Al Gore attempt to throw a football in a family game during the election fiasco in Nov. 2000, and he looked even worse than Kerry (if that is indeed possible). In fact it was so bad that I could barely stand looking at the tape it of it. .....it felt like I was looking at something fundamentally wrong......some perversion.

They both appear to be completely oblivious to their ineptitude.

Contrast that to GWB throwing out the first pitch in the World Series at Yankee Stadium right after 9/11 in front of an untold # of millions of people worldwide and not only throwing a STRIKE but looking good doing it! That was seriously clutch.

OMG...you're right! Somebody probably had to tell him that the "Batsman" had just "hit a six" before he could relate.

Yep -- and even Red Sox fans concede that Bush's feat was much more impressive than Kerry's. Speaking of the Red Sox, what did you think of the brawl?

I thought Varitek was a big wuss for fighting A-Rod with his mask on, and loved Sturtz going after the thug Kapler. A-Rod surely endeared himself to the Yankee faithful (myself included) by choosing to mix it up.

But at the end of the weekend the "brawl" was the last thing on my mind. Mariano blowing a two-run lead in the 9th took precedence, along with the team's overall pitching incompetence. If Brown and Mussina don't come back strong, we're in big trouble. I'm convinced that Contreras just doesn't have what it takes to pitch in big games.

This may be the single funniest thing I have heard all year!

Same here, of course.

I'm amazed at how good the Yankees' record is, considering all the problems we've had with starting pitching (like El Duque's hamstring bothering tonight). Not to mention Giambi's woes. Hopefully, The Boss will be reeling in Randy Johnson soon.

I hear ya, and am just as amazed. Timely hitting and good closing has been the secret, I suspect.

El Duque's line last night was noteworthy -- 2 in, 3 BB, 3 K. Showed his stuff was working, at least. Any word about how serious his hammy is?

I just hoid that the Unit could very well be in pinstripes by week's end. We'll see.
