Historic maintenance shed could endanger road project

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (AP) -- A Pennsylvania Department of Transportation maintenance shed will be considered for recognition as a historic place, an honor that would make it harder for PennDOT to widen a busy highway in suburban Philadelphia.

The one-story brown brick garage, one of 67 county facilities built in 1936 as part of Gov. Gifford Pinchot's campaign to pave 20,000 miles of rural roads, will be the subject of a $10,000 study to determine if it belongs on the National Register of Historic Places. PennDOT will fund the study, which was ordered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.

The maintenance facility - home to more than 100 workers who care for 776 miles of state roads - stands beside Route 202, which PennDOT is planning to widen starting in 2008. Ten feet would have to be removed from the building's 35-foot-deep lawn, but that change could be prohibited if the building is certified as historical.

Considering the condition of Pennsylvania's roads,
I doubt this building was used for much other than a weekly PennDOT poker game.

Considering the condition of Pennsylvania's roads, I doubt this building was used for much other than a weekly PennDOT poker game.

FUNNY!....and true.

Grandma's got a historic outhouse near the road. Will that be an excuse not to widen the road as well?

People in Kalifornia complain about the state of their roads. I tell them they haven't seen anything 'til they've driven through western Pee-Yay.

"There has to be a point where common sense can coexist with historical preservation," he said.

Where is the real Andrew Warren and who is this person whom they have replaced him with?

I'm all for preserving truly historic places, but a building built in the 20th century by the govt and used as a maintenence shed doesn't seem to qualify.

But they sure have enough money to paint big dots in the road, and erect signs to tell you to keep two of them between your vehicle & the one you're following: "Caution! Maintain at least 2 dots between vehicles!".

And to erect innumerable large signs, "Fasten your seat belt for the next million miles!"

And, instead of doing something useful, erect signs, "Caution! Regressive Driver Area!"

ONE visit to PA's roads was enough; there isn't enough shoo-fly pie in Lancaster County to ever lure me back.

Besides, I have a good recipe, now.

BTW did I mention that the above mentioned signs, and others similar seem to not leave any room or money to erect useful, informative signs...like which way & how far to the next town?

Also, the only state I've driven in that designates Interstate exits as "Old Exit #...," still using the destination from pre-standardization, umpteen years ago.
