MIAMI (AP) - Ricky Williams has told the Miami Dolphins that he's retiring after just five years in the NFL, The Miami Herald reported on its Web site Sunday.

Williams said he was overjoyed by his decision.

"You can't understand how free I feel," Williams told the Herald in a cell phone interview Saturday before boarding a plane in Hawaii and heading to Asia to begin several months of travel.

I'm also LOL, but for a somewhat different reason.

The quote "It didn't cause him to retire, he said, as much as reinforce his reasons for wanting to do so. " makes it sound as though Ricky leaving 'cuz he wants to be able to smoke more pot.

But his attorney, Gary Ostrow, told The Associated Press: "As far as I'm concerned, there is no violation."

Hey, great defense, Counselor.

Is there a better reason (he said warming up the water pipe?)

))in fan, but Ricky's timing stinks. Less than a week ago Eddie George was on the market, as was that RB New England released (who I believe has signed with Tennessee). Williams had seven months to consider retirement. Couldn't he have shown some consideration for his team, and made the decision just a little earlier. This hurts the Dolphins.

Oh well. Go Jags!

Yup. It's for real. Man, that guy is nuts. It's a good thing he's a football player, because if he lost interest at 27, he would have lost interest in my job around 2.7.

In May, three South Florida newspapers reported that Williams tested positive for marijuana and faced a fine of at least $650,000 for violating the league's substance-abuse policy for a second time since joining the Dolphins.

His beeber was stoned.

Do you have any evidence to cite that this is what he does or did do?

$710.96... The price of freedom.

If he's invested his millions properly, he doesn't need to subject himself any longer to steroid fiends wanting to break every bone in his body... I don't blame him a bit.

Reminds me of that anti-drug PSA that says, "Nothing happens to you when you smoke pot." The young man is down in the basement and you hear his mother's voice upstairs, "Did you look for a job today?" The man jumps up off the couch and stubs out his joint, "No, Ma, I...." Yep, all that pot just leeched the desire to play football. Oh, well, I hope he'll be happy and maybe just take a year off to do what he wants and then be ready to play again.

Remember those Philadelphia fans who went to the draft to boo the Eagles if they chose anyone besides Ricky Williams? Remember the loud cascade of boos when the Eagles drafted Donovan McNabb instead?

Sometimes, the fans are wrong. Wonder if those guys will admit it now? I'm an Eagle fan myself, and was disgusted by those fans booing McNabb.

Ricky spent his millions on houses, hummers, etc. He's selling everything now. He also has 3 kids with 3 different women.

Wasn't this dread-locked guy moaning about "not being motivated" last year, too?

It always seemed Ricky was a square peg in a round hole. I think the NFL came very close to driving the man crazy. If he's sincere, God bless him and hopefully he'll come out on the other side.

Oh, and GO VIKINGS!

Was lurking in the alt.sports.football.pro.miami-dolphins newsgroups. I'm a Pats fan but I feel for these guys now.

What a punch in the stomach 4 days before camp.
