Still George McGovern (Q&A)
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review ^ | July 24, 2004 | Bill Steigerwald

George McGovern is still a Big Government liberal -- and still proud of it.

Thirty-two years after being obliterated by Richard Nixon, 49 states to 1, the World War II war hero, ex-college professor and former U.S. senator of South Dakota has not moved one moderate inch off his spot on the left end of the political spectrum.

At 82, McGovern is still anti-war, still trying to dethrone a Republican president, and still pushing retro-New Deal programs such as "free" Medicare for all ages.

As the Democrats prepare to nominate Johns Kerry and Edwards in Boston next week, I called McGovern at his summer home near Missoula, Mont., to talk about the coming election and his new book, "The Essential America: Our Founders and the Liberal Tradition":

He was on Fox this morning. I especially enjoyed a statement he made, praising Woodrow Wilson, FDR and JFK as great liberals.

Wilson = WWI

FDR = WWII

JFK = Vietnam

Now why do they really have a problem with Iraq?

He was on Hannity & Colmes last nite. Very dignified and kindly, the reason he is out front no doubt. He praises every good "liberal" idea...social security, medicare, civil rights (not liberal) and on. Colmes never asked any hard questions and neither did Fox and Friends. I wanted someone to ask if there are any conservative ideas he has or does support, are there any liberal ideas he thinks were wrong headed, does he think abortion and gay rights are liberal ideas that will be "accepted" as good like the ones mentioned above. He also said that the terrorists don't like us (we need to know why they don't like us, he said), because they see the richest nation on earth not doing enough to improve their pitiful existence. Still the same McGovern...........

McGovern, after he left politics, bought some business property. He was shocked at the number of stupid bureaucratic hoops he had to jump through to run the business, and he actually complained that the system was onerous and stifling for a business. For a time, I thought he might have had a Damascus experience and had seen the light. No way, Jack.

Looks like George sold the business and is back to trashing free enterprise and loving Big Brother. He should be locked in a room with 20 bureaucrats organizing and ruling over every inch of his life. The man is an unrepetant dolt.

Well, at least he's not a bitter old fool like Carter. I'll give him that. Maybe.

I saw Georgie Mac on H&C last night. I was rolling with laughter. He was saying the most ridiculous things and Alan was nodding in agreement.

It floors me that people like McGovern are respected icons in our society when the truth is he is a very very ignorant man. His is not "just another way of thinking", he is truly and ignorant and pitiful man. The proof is that anyone that makes it to his age and still thinks liberalism is a good idea has not spent much time learning the basics about the condition of life. Maybe it is willfull ignorance, but it is ignorance nonetheless.

Or he is a liar.0
