FUTURE SOUNDTRACK FOR AMERICA

Barsuk Records is set to release a fundraising CD compilation, titled future soundtrack for america, a joint project with MoveOn.org and Music For America, on August 10th. The compilation will include R.E.M.'s "The Final Straw (MoveOn mix)." McSweeney's Publishing is also releasing a book with similar fundraising goals that will include a copy of the CD; the future dictionary of america features contributions from an astounding group of almost 200 writers, from Paul Auster to Michael Chabon to Jonathan Franzen to Joyce Carol Oates to Kurt Vonnegut to Wendy Wasserstein.

One hundred percent of the proceeds from the book and CD projects will go to non-profit progressive organizations, including Music For America, Common Assets, The Sierra Club, and others.

The CD will be available in most stores and in the barsuk shop; something tells us that you just might be able to get it a few days earlier if you're on the MoveOn e-mail list...

Where I could find them, I've added links (on the performers' name) to their message boards. Only R.E.M and David Byrne (sadly, no message boards) have the profile of Linda Ronstadt, but still, let our voice be heard!

And boycott these leftie artists!!!

Its getting to the point where there are practically no pop. culture artists that I can enjoy any more! I'm sick to death of their hatred of America!

Ouch. Apparently Byrne hasn't realized that this ain't no party, this ain't no disco, this ain't no foolin' around.

Too bad Sleater-Kinney is on the list -- I like some of their music.

But I have a way of "getting back" at liberal groups whose music I like -- I play their tunes to keep me inspired doing my military PT. Regardless of whether its Pearl Jam or the Pretenders or whoever -- I'm sure they'd be pissed to know their music is helping keep the country strong and free!

Excellent point! Maybe his song called "Naive Melody" would have been a better selection.

No, but the goth-art R.E.M. site, very hard to read and navigate, made it hard for me to find the rest of the artists/tune on the Move.on.org valentine.

Only Nada Surf has a message board. Elliott Smith passed away (suicide) earlier this year, so don't FReep him, please!

The Rest of the CD:

Fountains of Wayne : Everything's Ruined (acoustic)
Nada Surf : Your Legs Grow
The Flaming Lips : Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (live on the BBC) Old 97's : Northern Line
Laura Cantrell : Sam Stone
Tom Waits : Day After Tomorrow
Elliott Smith : A Distorted Reality Is Now A Necessity To Be Free

That's kind of you -- thanks. Honestly I've been frustrated at how little I've done for the country in the war so far. Hopefully I'll be able to get myself overseas and do more in the near future -- and feel a little more worthy of all the extremely kind things people have had to say.

Yeah, and where's Ani DiFranco and a lot of other brilliant artists with stupid politics? I guess they'll be on the Ralph Nader CD.
