It's time again for another posting refresher course. Please take a moment to read. Thanks for your cooperation.
Only one of these topics will show up in a sidebar, posting to multiple topics will still only show one topic.
Activism/Chapters - Activism, protests, news and business of Free Republic Chapters. Freep this poll should be placed in vanity. General news stories about activism should be place in news. After action reports from Freeps are allowed here.
Announcements Notifications of Activism events, FR business
Breaking News - Not every story is breaking news. Breaking news should be news that affects most of us. There are some exceptions. If there is a hot current event happening, check breaking news. Most likely, it's there already, please check first, then use our search function. (explained below)
Editorial - Editorials are opinions. Some vanities, if well written and thought out can be considered editorial material.
Extended News - Extended news is for stories which have been posted previously and have updated or newer information.
Free Republic - This categories is reserved for Free Republic business.
Front Page News - Front page is for stories which are not breaking news, but would be found on the front page of a newspaper.
These are just some of the topics that you may use two or more. Do not go out of your way to put in more topics just to try to get more views for your thread. Doing so makes the topics less usable for everyone. Also, do not list every state on your thread. It is unnecessary. Please limit the state topics to those states that the story pertains to.
Business/Economy - Business, industry, financial, markets, trade, banking, budget, debt, taxes and economy news.
Constitution/Conservatism - Discussion of conservatism and conservative principles and issues.
Crime/Corruption News and discussion of crime, corruption government abuse, power grabs, and scandal.
Culture/Society - Discussion of health, education, welfare, drugs, abortion, environment, housing, unions, employment, social security, religion, arts, humanity, sports, and other cultural and societal issues.
Foreign Affairs - News and discussion of international politics, foreign affairs, diplomacy, national security, war, military, defense and armed forces issues.
Government - News and discussion of all branches of government, departments, agencies, law, policy, legislation, processes and judiciary.

News/Current Events - News and discussion of current events.

Political Humor/Cartoons - Funny stuff
Politics/Elections - Discussions of politics and elections.
Unclassified - Articles awaiting re-classification.
Any State or Country - Do not spam every single state or country, please use only those that pertain to your article.
Vanities and General Interest.
Your Opinion/Questions - All non-sourced non-news threads are posted here. This doesnt mean your one thought is a thread by itself. Lately, we have been seeing articles posted that should be comments made on the main article. Your comment/vanity article will be pulled or moved to General Interest. Vanities should be limited to the mission of Free Republic.
Is for discussions of news and interest topics unrelated to the news forum. We will move articles unrelated to the news forum here.
For all of you who have blogs or personal web sites or personal news or opinion or forum sites that you would like to discuss or promote on Free Republic, here's the place to do it.
Our new Bloggers & Personal forum is for:
Click on the "Bloggers & Personal" forum link on the Forums sidebar of the latest posts pages.
Hopefully, this will become a very popular forum for promoting and or discussing blogs and personal opinion/news/forum pages.
If it's a breaking news topic, check breaking news first, it's probably already posted.
To avoid duplicate posts, please search before posting. The best method to search is to pick a key word or two from the title. If the article you are posting is, "Funny Video, This Land", start with 'Land' for the key word. If it is a hot topic, you might want to use two or more keywords, in this case, try 'Jib'. For an effective search, select 'match any words' and select 'order by post time'.
Updated FR Excerpt and Link Only or Deny Posting List due to Copyright Complaints
FYI: The New York Times is not on the excerpt list.
That's what it's there for. To practice and ask questions. Ask anything here if you'd like, I'll try to help, or try direct you where help is available.
I must be on the "I understand you" list.
That's me on the right....
ping hehehehe
I am not a newbie by any stretch of the imagination, but I *still* don't understand the whole "vanity" thing. It says above that "Your comment/vanity article will be pulled or moved to General Interest." Does that mean that if you post a vanity in say, "Breaking News" section or "Education" that it will be moved to "General Interest" because that's where it should be in the first place?
Then it says that vanities "should be limited to the mission of Free Republic." So, that makes me think that I shouldn't come to FR looking for help with my son's programming questions. But, then it says this: "General interest (Chat) Is for discussions of news and interest topics unrelated to the news forum. We will move articles unrelated to the news forum here. " Well, isn't that a description of something that is outside of the "mission of Free Republic"?
This has always driven me crazy. The above statement seems to say NO VANITIES and PUT YOUR VANITIES HERE at the same time. I can't tell how you scared I get (hee hee) when I want to post a vanity. I'm never sure if it's OK to do so. One time I made the mistake of asking what had happened to "Freeper So and So" and I got raked over the coals. Well, asking what happened to someone seems to me to fall into the category of "interest topics unrelated to the news forum."
I'm SOOOO confused!!!!
Also, taglines are tax deductible.
Is there a FReeper Lore thread? I want to send a link to vanderleun, he writes for American Digest and posts his articles here...;-D iirc he also writes (or wrote) a column for the NYT.
Just curious, why does that bother you? Once you are registered, you are a member and allowed to post threads aren't you? I have never posted one actually, and may never!!! I know I would mess it all up!
We are trying to accommodate everyone by providing the chat and bloggers forums. We are a family, and we sometimes tangent to other topics, aka, my son, but that is not our primary goal. Hence the different forums. Many think the other forums are a banishment, but that's not so. Anyone can set their setting to the 'browse all' settings located at the top right hand side of any latest threads or posts page.
In the old days, it was fine having everyone post everything to one forum, but as technology changes, so must we. It is no longer feasible, first with the number of posters, second with the advent of blogs, etc. We have to categorize. Some are pissed about that. Then again, some were pissed about bringing in mods. Sorry to say, if we weren't here, Jim would be working 43/7, and wouldn't be able to take a road trip to visit different chapters. He totally deserves some time to vacation. FR is too big for one man today.
So, Jim and John have provided areas for those topics to be discussed, we move threads based upon current events criteria. The primary focus of FR is to remove liberals from power and restore our constitution, sorry to say, your son's computer troubles aren't high on that priority list.
Check the lexicon of FR posted at the top (comment one), that might help.
THAT is an incredible read! Thank you for pointing it out! It should be the first chapter when someone writes a book about FreeRepublic.
Inquiring minds want to know.
Got it! Thanks. ;-D
Out of all the hysterical threads on FR, that one is my favorite... Laz is a humor maestro :-)
Bump and a welcome to new members :-)
I've always been the cool mod. Thanks for asking.
I seem to recall a thread a few weeks ago where there were multiple Admin Mods posting simultaneously and disparaging one another. LMAO.
Now, there are 11 of us plus Jim and we all work whenever our schedules allow us. We do not get paid, it's strictly volunteer. I can not see how Jim could do it on his own. The trolls are trying, it's only going to get worse as November approaches, you math folks, as the limit approaches November.... we are on them like flies on honey, and you're help is so appreciated. Sometimes there are 4-5 of us moderating, and we still can't keep up. It's physically impossible for us to follow posters around, read posts and threads and monitor new sign ups.
There are things you all don't see, like newbie sign ups. Today for example, there was "Yourfacemyass" and "jimroblovescock" as new users you'll never see or know about, these are mild screen names.
There are trolls that get by, but Jim's rule is, let them post, we can sort them out later. But, those types of names listed above are auto delete. That's just the tip of the iceberg.
You all bitch and moan, this thread has been posted a gazillion times, but, check this, there were 25,643 replies posted, and 11 of us moderating on a voluntary basis. It's physically impossible for us to moderate that. We depend on your help, and if we can't get to it within a couple minutes, remember, we are limited resources.
But, we really appreciate all your help, without you, this forum would sink to the DU levels. Thanks, AM
So, we broke those rules, and came out and started talking about being a mod.
*** Feels good to come out of the closet doesn't it? ;-)
