'SANDY' STORM
By DEBORAH ORIN

July 23, 2004 -- Lawmakers are seeking to determine if any original documents are gone forever as they probe whether former National Security Adviser Sandy Berger hid top-secret files in his socks to sneak them out of the National Archives, a spokesman said yesterday.

---Snip---

Berger, who served under President Bill Clinton, says he accidentally destroyed some highly classified documents. Government officials wonder whether any of the documents bore handwritten notes from senior Clinton administration officials that don't appear elsewhere.

If that were the case, the basic document would be available because other copies exist. But any scribbled notes that might reveal the thinking of Clinton aides or proposals for revising the document before it was put in final form would be lost.

The key document in question is a review of the 1999 millennium terror plot, which includes portions critical of Clinton policy. Berger sought four or five different drafts of the document and those are among the missing papers, officials say.

In most cases, Berger was given copies of what was in the Archives files — certainly after Archives staffers became suspicious he was removing documents — but officials say it is possible he also got some unique documents directly from the files.

Unlike the Slimes, the New York Post is reporting that Sandy may have Burgled originals. The Slimes doesn't seem to understand that any handwritten margin notes were just as important as the text of any draft. And it looks like that might be what Sandy the Burglar was after.

He "accidentally" stashed 50 classified documents into his pants and socks. The he "accidentally" took them out of the National Archives. Then he "accidentally" destroyed some of them.

I came up with much better alibis than that when I was 6 years old -- just before my daddy "accidentally" whupped my backside.

One wouldn't think this nuance should be so hard for these "intellectuals" to grasp.

It is important to note that the margin notes *make* the documents unique. They may all be versions of the same document and 99% alike; a draft, perhaps, that was circulated among a particular group for review. But each will have a unique set of notes, revisions, what have you.

It appears that the Bergler stole multiple versions of the same document, and destroyed several of them. He apparently did, in fact, destroy unique documents, which were all versions of the same base document.

There will be a congressional investigation of this matter, no doubt, and we'll be treated to the usual "I can't recall" and "mistakes were made" from a parade of witnesses. It will be infuriating.

My guess is that there are a couple of drafts that are gone forever, but that the Archive clerks--alert to the pilfering--made copies of additional drafts Bergler pilfered.

I suspect a few of the 4-5 drafts are lost forever, but there may be a couple that have copies remaining. That may be enough to nail more people than just Bergler.

Bergler is the new Webb Hubbell. Going in, he was prepared to serve prison time, and he probably will. I guess they figured out that the prison time he would serve would be less onerous that the consequences that would have to be endured if the draft copies saw the light of day.

Oh they understand it just fine. They just want to ignore it. If that had been a Republican they would be frothing at the mouth.

There are only a couple of people that Sandy the Burglar would be willing to steal for. Bj or Hillry. Personally I lean toward it being Hillry's handwriting that got destroyed.

I really can't understand why all those documents were not scanned and converted to PDF. There are service bureaus that do this all the time. They can handle large volumes of documents very quickly. I had a 10,000 pages of documents converted to PDF in a couple of days.
