To equate the gay marriage issue with civil rights is wrong. Gays are not denied the right to vote and are protected from discrimination in every sector except the military, and even there they are allowed to serve if they keep their sexuality a secret.
I'm not against gay unions. This gives individual states the right to determine how they would like to treat gay couples as legal entities. I'm against interstate recognition for same-sex unions because it gives a very small minority the right to change the laws against the will of an overwhelming majority, in areas other than where they were joined in union.
In time, when two thirds of the states accept gay unions, the question of expanding the recognition of gay unions in other states can be taken up again at the federal level. Until then, let them try and change the minds of the people who live in their local communities, and their states.
I am not going to ZOT you. I see this issue as a slippery slope. I am not a overtly religeous person. I believe what I believe and stand by it.

Marriage is and has been a ritual for those who have affection for one another as a contract of fidelity in order to procreate and raise children.
