July 22, 2004 -- Joe Lockhart, the White House press secretary under Bill Clinton who still speaks for his former boss, had it right yesterday in discussing the growing Sandy Berger scandal. "The first rule of damage control," he said, "is to find an alternative story line. I think they've found one."Which is why Democrats, from Clinton on down, swiftly went on the offensive to change the topic about the criminal investigation that forced the onetime national security adviser to step down as an adviser to presidential candidate John Kerry.
"Well, that's Sandy for you," Clinton told the Denver Post at a local book signing. "We were all laughing about it on the way over here."
An unidentified Clintonite ex-colleague told The Washington Post: "For all those who know and love him, it's easy to see how this would happen."
And James Woolsey, one of Clinton's several CIA directors, claimed that "almost anybody who's worked on things like this has done something like this from time to time."
That is, at least twice "inadvertently" walking off with top-secret documents from the National Archives after shoving handwritten notes into one's socks.
Hey, that happens every day, right?

I have a hard time believing Woolsey said this with a straight face. He's joking, right?
Its an incredible attempt to "spin" something like this. Its also very transparent and stupid.
Try FIVE,/b> times!
Personally, I'd have 'expressed concern over the lax security at the National Archieves that would allow someone to inadvertently leave with classified documents.' And then throw in 'Strange how an administration that is running on their ability to keep the country secure, can't keep documents in the middle of Washington secure.'
But, 'that's just Sandy' is good, too.
I agree with your take on Woolsey. I don't believe he defended his successor at CIA for "inadvertantly" taking documents home.
He said it with a straight face, unfortunately.
"Well, that's Sandy for you," said Clinton.
Meaning what?
That Berger is a kleptomaniac?
How Clintonesque. I guess he means they've made sure it's all disappeared.
in January former White House press secretary Joe Lockhart was enlisted to remain on standby if a public controversy blossomed.
after he had retained Breuer as counsel, Berger volunteered that he had also taken 40 to 50 pages of notes during three visits to the Archives beginning in July, the lawyer said. Berger turned the notes over to the Archives. He has acknowledged through attorneys that he knowingly did not show these papers to Archives officials for review before leaving -- a violation of Archives rules, but not one that he perceived as a serious security lapse.
I have a hard time believing Woolsey said this with a straight face. He's joking, right?
And I thought Woolsey was somewhat a straight shooter. So much for that.
He went to the National Archives 5 times, he took documents 2 times.
Socks the Cat Burglar
Nope,he's telling the awful truth. The Clintons and their horde have NEVER had the slightest ragard for doing the right thing. So,for them, this is "normal."
No evidence? Sandy has already admitted what he did ( or partially so,anyway)to the public,on T.V.!
