Large HazMat spill reported in the Deer Springs area in northern San Diego County. Highway 15 has been shut down in both directions.
Reports from the scene indicate a 3000 gallon tanker full of a corrosive liquid is outgassing, creating a cloud that's blowing across the freeway.
CHP is reporting difficulty in getting motorists to stop. Multiple drivers have traversed through the cloud.
San Diego TV sites and the California Highway Patrol C.A.D. site would probably be the best way to follow this.
Somehow "The truck is f**ting" just didn't sound official enough.
Yeah, that's my area... How on earth did you track where they were at?? I'm impressed!
And yes, gotta love the suggestions some traffic folks are giving...gonna be getting an earful from some CHP type folk for sure!
A friend on the 15 just saw them go by. I'm a couple of miles north of you.
And another "parade" headed that way and a helicopter going that direction, as well...
Thought it was my computer when CHP site wouldn't load. I tried the sigalert site and it is still okay. It's giving the same info as in your post from nbcsandiego.
I can't believe those people going the wrong way! Talk about more accidents just waiting to happen ;/
California drivers. Their motto is "get outta my way".
;x
My poor mother is flying into LAX tomorrow and my sis in law is renting a car to drive up to Northridge. They get in at 3 in the afternoon....... I've already told mom to just sit back, read a book, plan on sitting on the freeway for a while. She's from a tiny town in central Illinois.. never been to LA. .. chuckling... oh what an education she's going to get.
Going north out of LAX at three in the afternoon, huh?
Tough choice: do you want to be stuck in 405 traffic, be stuck on Sepulveda, or be stuck in the canyons.
Mom may need a 'trank to go with that book.
I suggested that too : ) She's taking tylenol with codeine for some pain she's having in her arm. They seem to really knock her out so I told her to be sure to take them while she's flying. Sis in law said she'd be sure mom was appropriately "medicated" as long as I had her a bottle of vodka, tonic, and some limes ready at the room. They are packed and ready to go : )
Next time your mother flies out here, she should fly into Burbank. Much, much more convenient. And closer to Northridge, I think.
Update...but only from the CHP log, so not gobs more info...at least THAT is something, though...
My reading of this sure makes it sound like they are not at all anticipating a quick clean up...bringing in signs from Lakeside area? That must mean they've got all available from CLOSE locations in use...and that they STILL need more sure seems to indicate they are planning on needing more than just some cops at some of the less likely alternates folks are trying...

Probably chromic acid, CrO3, solution for plating purposes if it's in a tanker.
Well, it's significant enough that Channel 8 -KNSD has broken in to prime time news to update it...and they have their traffic copter still up......
They are evacuating residents to Esc. High School.
It is a MESS (from the visual)..saying they aren't at all sure HOW to handle the spill...probably at least (and she sounded very unconvinced) 5-6 hours till possibly opening...
But they really sound a bit stumped (based on that report) about how to handle it...
A motorist is being credited with people the one who noticed the leak that then got it to the attention of ____ (didn't catch who...the driver? authorities?)...
At the moment, it's looking like somewhere around 2am. CHP is bringing the night shift in early.
The big rig reference just seemed to be a routing question to me. Deer Springs exit sometimes has a few rigs stopped there, or if they're on the Gopher Canyon end they may be figuring out whether to risk driving it or go back to '76.
Looking out the window, the wind direction seems to have changed to a more northerly one... not good for the gang at the C.P.
See 35
...course if they mixed that conflict in the tanker, there'll be dead people.
Somehow I think it's going to be far later than 2 am......if it's bad enough that they are doing evacs and bringing in sign trucks from that far away, and (according to that news report) hazmat is still unclear as to how to handle it.......
And oh what a mess for those truck drivers with 76 as the only real alternate if they can't go through...you'd think most of them would head down further to 78 instead.
Now channel 8 (KFMB)has a breaking news banner running on the bottom of the screen talking about where the closures are and about the mandatory evacuations.
