"All sorts of metal objects used to be allowed before 9/11. ... Not just box cutters either. Nail clippers, wine openers, folding knives with less than 4" blades. And Boy Scout knives with all of the above. We used to be a free country."

We're still a free country. I carry a pistol, sometimes a shotgun, perhaps a beverage, even a lit cigar if I want whenever I fly. Ditto for when I drive. It's my plane. My car.

I wouldn't expect to take such things onto someone else's plane without having their permission, however.

But that's a far cry from not being free. When it's my plane, I'm free. When it's someone else's plane, I tend to honor their property.

Problem is, it is the government banning things from being brought on planes. Unlike you, the government does not honor the property of airlines.
