DNC: Dean Nears Comeback?
The Boston Herald ^ | Wednesday, July 21, 2004 | David R. Guarino

Whichever bright-eyed Kerry staffer decided it'd be a good thing to send former opponent Howard Dean out on the campaign trial in the week leading to the Democratic National Convention ought to be tossed into Boston Harbor, naked, with nothing but a John Kerry bobblehead doll as company.

Dean is out there all right, stumping for ... himself.

"The convention’s not until next week -- it’s not too late to get back in, right?" the former Vermont governor asked yesterday in Palm Springs, Calif.

And this came only after Dean was greeted by raucus cheers, posed for dozens of pics with women and signed autographs all around.

Here's some comments that'll give Kerry nightsweats.

"I’m sorry (Dean's) not running for president," Suzy Ficker, a resident of Palm Springs, told The Desert Sun newspaper.

"He’s not afraid to say what he thinks. He was against this war, this atrocity," added Sylvia Gilon, a retired school teacher.

Of course the voters were quick to add they were planning to vote for Kerry/Edwards - but that's just the kind of soft feelings about Kerry the campaign is terrified about. The anti-Bush feeling is rabid, the pro-Edwards feeling is strong. But folks haven't warmed up to JK. And, judging from opinions here in the home state he's represented for two decades, that ain't gonna happen before November.

That's not to say Kerry won't win - it takes a lot less than liking a man to make him president (see Nixon 1968).

Dean surely revved up the party faithful, but he lost and doesn't yet know it. That sad fact is making him a less-than-enthusiastic stumper for Kerry/Edwards.

Want another example? Dean pushed aside the usual questions about whether he'd join Kerry's cabinet but, asked what his plans are for next year, Dean gave the oh-so-encouraging answer: "I don’t know, that depends if John wins or not."

Memo to Kerry: Keep him in California.

I did not see this in the Herald this morning. I guess that it is just an on-line thing!

A sobering thought -- who would be the nominee if John Kerry died before next week? Edwards? Dean? Clinton?

Is Howie "speaking" in Boston?

What with Kerry possibly being indicted for feloneous release of classified information he was provided by Berger (which will happen right after Ted Kennedy votes for a tax cut), Dean is just waiting in the wings.

Hmmm, there are several suspects with possible motive once you start bringing in that type of consideration. . .Dean, Clintons, Al Gore might want revenge, I believe Kerry recently snubbed Ted Kennedy. . .

And, if so, did Bill suggest it...???

There is still no rational explanation for Berger having done what he did. But there is every rational reason to wager that the Clintons were the source of the leak.

How does the anti-war crowd support these clowns. Edwards co-sponcered the act that authorized the war and Kerry gave the most hawkish speech for war of any Senator. I really don't get it, is the anti-war crowd absolutely stupid?
