'STOCKING-STUFFER' BERGER QUITS KERRY
By DEBORAH ORIN and VINCENT MORRIS --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
July 21, 2004 -- WASHINGTON Former National Security Adviser Sandy Berger under criminal investigation for sneaking top-secret documents out of the National Archives in his pants legs and, possibly, his socks abruptly quit yesterday as an adviser to John Kerry.
The "sock-doc" probe into Berger's conduct threatened to explode into a major headache for Kerry before next week's Democratic convention, where his top goal is to convince Americans that he can be trusted with national security.
Berger, who served under then-President Bill Clinton, has been acting as an informal adviser to Kerry and public advocate for his campaign.

I love these stories. It connects the dots between burgler and kerry for those not in the know.
Continuations of the How could this story come out now? line questioning the timing and not the crime.
And quickly the points will turn to:
All National Security Advisers do this.
Bergers critics are right-wing Christians; theyre fundamentalist whack jobs who want to take away a womens right to choose.
No attack on Sandy Berger ever fed a poor starving child.
This is all a distraction from the war in Iraq and the failure to find WMD. What about abu Graib?
Fawn Hall shredded documents.
This investigation has dragged out way too long and cost too much money.
This is all about politics. Its time to move on and get about creating jobs in this the worst economy since the Depression.
The motives of the prosecutors are suspect.
Whats the big deal. Everyone lies about stuffing their pants.
"Republicans are obsessed with sex and want the government in everyone's pants."
"Sandy is a woman's name. The Republicans are homophobic, as seen by Governor Schwarznegger's recent "girlie man" comments. The American people are sick and tired of this mean-spirited, wedge issue politics."
The people in France are shocked and dont understand the big fuss in the states about this.
The story dies in the next three days. Berger is back on the team in no time. ABC inadvertently hires him as a consultant to critique the Bush presidency. The public moves on as Carville and Bill Clinton said they should.
Wow.. there's no end to the pun and fun. I was amazed that Lawrence O'Donald said Berger's explanation makes no sense at all. O'Donald is the biggest lib on PMSNBC. He said that on Joe Scarbrough's show tonight.
If the "timing" talking point doesn't get any traction, the Democrats will go with the old reliable stand by, which is, "not the nature of the evidence, but the seriousness of the charge"
That will cement the case for sure.
Where's ZZtop on this?
Doug from Upland is needed.
Paging, Pickup!
I haven't heard anybody refer to this as 'SockGate' yet.
Except that trick was used to go after Bush I for an allegation that he'd flown to Paris and connived with the Iranians to free the Americans Iran was holding as hostages just as President Reagan was taking office. In this case, they'll argue there is no seriosness in the charge. Clinton is already doing this and laughing it off. For them, it's an honest mistake that he inadvertently stuffed his pants, inadvertently took the documents home, and inadvertently threw them away. Seems like a stretch to me, but I believe the Democrats will be onboard and as loyal on this one as they were when Clinton was lying. The press will do it's best to spike the story or find an angle to help Kerry.
I'd have preferred underwear gate.
I've heard buzz that there is, and I hope so for the likely sheer hilarity of it. Too bad Chris Farley is no longer with us to perform the inevitable Berger parody on Saturday Night Live.
Can't use it. Clinton trademarked it already.
Yep. Same song, different day. The Democrats need to get a new playbook and new songbook. They're as predictable as the sun rising in the east and setting in the west.
Ping. Worth your time to click on the link for the NY Post article.
That's a keeper! I can't wait to get my paper in hand. The N.Y.Post has THE besdt headline writers, bar none. :-)
But it NOT going to work this time.
Berger should have learned from his boss that it's dangerous to hide secrets in your pants.
