This US/Canada thing sometimes sounds so much like the Australia/NZ thing it's scary.

You even get the same sort of silly "we actually defend you" stuff we get from some Kiwis.

I also note that the "we are better than you because we rank 3rd in tiddlywinks playing efficiency" card is also played.

Some time ago I thought it would be great to have NZ as an Australian state. Now I agree pretty much with the response you have quoted by the Australian to your NZ blogger.

The two countries have just moved too far apart on so many levels for any sort of merger to take place. I'm sure this view would be supported by the majority on your side of the Tasman.

I agree. Leave NZ as it is and let it sink, and let anyone who think right move to your side of the Tasman. (wink, wink)

Alternatively, we should let Tasmania and NZ join the rump of Canada after their Western provinces left for the United States or the Australian Federation in desperations. They were made for each other.
