In a statement issued late Monday, Berger said the removal of those papers was unintentional. But law enforcement sources told CNN that some of the papers he is said to have taken from the National Archives were stuffed into his socks as well as other parts of his clothing.

That allegation drew sharp responses from two of Berger's associates. President Clinton's former spokesman, Joe Lockhart, said Berger "categorically denies that he ever took documents and stuffed them in his socks.

Wow. I feel for you guys. FR is buzzing like I have never seen on a lazy summer day. Too many burglar threads.

The VOLUME of FR traffic tells me this story has legs....

Wonder how many threads are on the DUmmy site today? I'd love to see what they are saying about this issue.

It's become obvious that this story is developing legs. Even the Establishment Media can no longer ignore it, and soon they will no longer be able to play it down. Because it needs to blow up in full force by the day the convention opens, I expect the velocity of the unraveling to increase exponentially.

The "Established Media"? No way. It will be:

"Oh, everyone does it. It's no big deal. Get over it. Next up, Bush mispronounces nuclear. Should an independent grammar commission be called?

He was on the talk shows the other night with a bolo tie the other night!

On other threads, several people claimed that - according to CNN - the stolen documents included one in which Richard Clarke sharply criticized the Clinton administration for its tepid approach to fighting terrorism. Has this been confirmed? If so, it would knock down the second anti-Bush media darling in two weeks, the first being Joseph Wilson. It will be the "Bush lied" people who will turn out to be the real liars.

I sure feel a lot safer knowing our national security was in the hands of a "sloppy", "careless" security advisor. This has all the earmarks of a Clinton setup. A cloud over Kerry for the convention and a heads up for the Clintonistas on the 9/11 panel.

Ignore the socks, stay focused on the felonies.

Exactly.

Clintonista MO. Put out something absurd or not true, then use it as a defense.

Suckerpunch strawman. Obfuscate and direct attention elsewhere.

I also notice that on Drudge, David Gergen is out ahead of this scandal already defending Berger.

"placing them in his jacket, pants and socks, and also inadvertently took copies of actual classified documents in a leather portfolio."

yeah, this kind of thing happens to me all the time when I'm going through top secret national security info...

Regardless of whether his pants were full then you can bet they are today.

Oh, everyone does it. It's no big deal. Get over it.

That will be the attempted spin. But it won't work this time. Not when national security, secrecy laws and classified material are involved.

I had a Secret clearance once, over 30 years ago. The national security and defense establishments take this kind of thing very seriously, as I saw first hand when an E-7 accidently left the secure communications safe unlocked one night. It was ugly, and it was only a small mistake.

This was deliberate theft of classified material caught on camera. People are going to jail for this.

I don't know how a certified idiot like David Gergen got as far as he has. He's thicker than pea soup.

Gergen: Gergen also said he found it "suspicious" that news of the investigation should surface just at the Sept. 11 commission is about release its report.

Funny. I find it suspicious that we are just finding out about it after the commission finishes its report.

The sad part is that the White House and the RNC will not capitalize on this.

They'll be the "gentlemen" and let it slide.

Can't they play by the dems rules just once and hammer the crap out of them?
