Sandy Berger has met much of the day with attorneys.

Among those he has hired is former Clinton administration lawyer Lanny Breuer.

Sources say Breuer has been in contact with prosecutors.

Sources also say Berger is stressing a willingness to cooperate, but investigators have not yet asked to speak with him.

Mr. Berger serves as an informal advisor to Senator John Kerry on national security matters.

Kerry didn't put him up to this. If anything, Kerry would want this buried. It doesn't help Kerry at all that the entire country now knows that Kerry's advisor on National Security issues is nothing more than a traitor.

No, this is Kerry's downfall. You can bet the RATS will play this up as a leak by the right. The answer to that is:

Revenge for Abu Gharib is a bitch, isn't it.

I wonder what kind of info the documents contained?

"And what if the sock docs in question have EVERYTHING to do with the 9-11 report coming out this Thursday?"

- I have sinced learned that the docs in question had to do with a post- assessment of the effectiveness of US home security after the so-called millenium alert. This report carried the highest secrecy level possible for any US
state papers because it was highly sensitive by being critical of the state of US readiness. It detailed a number of recommendations that should be taken to improve security against an internal terrorist attack. I understand that improving visa controls and airport checks were among the most prominent areas needing added security. There are two possible reasons that Burgler wanted these documents:
1) Clintoon never acted on any of the recommendations in the report; and,
2) Another report at about the time of the millennium attack scare recommended that certain airports were more vulnerable than others to terrorist threat. One of the airports on the short list was Boston International in Lurch's home state. Senators from the states affected were given a role in ensuring that the security situation at the airport(s) in their state were strengthened. I don't have details on what that role was or if it came with funding, but Lurch also did nothing.
So Burgler had both an old and a new reason to have this report buried. It would be interesting to find out if the dates that Burgler took the report "home" (I think he admitted to doing so four to five times) coincided with the dates that Republicans on the 9/11 commission were reviewing the documents from that time period. If so, they would never have become aware of their existence. If you're Burgler, it's worth the risk, no?

Berger....might start watching his back even closer now.

I'd hate to read that he...flung himself off a skyrise, or was found dead & nude in some government office.

FRegards,

" The fact the Dems are blaming this on the big bad VRWC leads me to believe they were caught off guard about this investigation."
- I think you are right and I believe it was leaked by a Republican source at a very critical time for the Dems and their plans. If I had to make a guess as to the leak source, I would say Ashcroft. He seemed to be the only witness before the 9/11 group who seemed genuinely browned off at the committee and it's partisanship, while he was testifying. Remember, it was he who caused the flap by unexpectedly revealing the 1995 Gore-Lick memo restricting cooperation between the FBI and the CIA. I think he views the committee Dems as virtual traitors and he would do just about anything to get even and burn their butts.

The dems have known about this since last October. They have had every opportunity to leak it at a time of their choosing.

They have NOT known about this since October. I know this because it would have been posted on Free Republic .com.

Berger cannot be trusted and should have his Top Secret

Clearance REVOKED. NOW!

He shouldn't even be granted a "confidential" clearance.

What's wrong with this country?

I'd like to know why Bush didn't purge all the Clinton leftovers when he took office. Everyone who was associated with Clinton should been given their walking papers the day after Bush's inauguration, and everyone else who didn't hold an official position should have had their priveleges such as security clearances, revoked.

I don't know what's wrong with this country.

Sure they have. Berger knew about it. Whoever requested the documents knew about it. Whoever the archivist contacted ( a dem) knew about it. Somebody had to notice that berger's home was searched by the FBI.

As an advisor to Kerry, Berger was obligated to inform him of the possible embarrassment. Hillary knew (remember her very odd reference to the election being decided by "events"?)

Good reply. Berger should NEVER be allowed access to even "confidential" information again. He's not responsible.

I seem to recall Clinton dragged his feet getting security clearances for his people when he first took office. That's how serious they took our Nation's security.

Actually I think he wants 24 hour protection. We all know how other informants have ended up, usually 6 feet under.

Don't assume that national security was taken any more seriously by the Bush administration, even as late as 9/10/2001
