WSJ: Berger Took Secret 9/11 Docs on Five Occasions

Kerry campaign advisor Sandy Berger removed secret terrorism documents from a 9/11 Commission reading room on no fewer than five occasions, his lawyer Lanny Breuer admitted late Monday night.

Breuer told the Wall Street Journal that his client, who served previously as the Clinton administration's National Security Advisor, inadvertently removed several copies of an after-action report on the foiled 1999 Millennium bomb plot during two separate visits to the top secret facility.

Breuer said also that Berger had deliberately removed handwritten notes that he had taken during three additional visits to the Archives last fall to review classified documents.

Mr. Breuer said removing those notes was a violation of National Archives policy, and that Mr. Berger regretted the action. "He knew it was a technical violation, and he admits that it was an error in judgment."

But according to New York civil rights lawyer Ron Kuby, Berger's decision to remove his notes wasn't just a "technical violation."

"You're not permitted to remove anything from that room - period," he said Tuesday morning. "And that means even your notes. If you're taking notes about classified information, those notes are now classified. They're placed in a secure area. You can have access to them only while being viewed by a security officer. Nothing gets removed."

Even if Berger had only removed his personal notes on classified material, it would still be a crime, said Kuby, who learned about classified reading room procedures during his own involvement in the trial of the 1993 World Trade Center bombers.

Re#39 LOL. Me too. It was a rack of Rolex watches from the jeweler's in my pants and socks. I'm glad they noticed them missing or I would have mistakenly, accidently, inadvertently, misplaced them on my messy desk or disposed of them....

Because there are TWO Americas. The Democrats are above the Law (again, again, again, again courtesy of President Bush and the cornucopia of girlymen Republicans

Berger will be sacrificed if this gets to close to Clinton.

Getting Berger to steal and "lose" those orinigals is just like in the Godfather when he calls in his markers on the undertaker

tell me, what did he do with these documents?

An article last night said he admits to "accidentally discarding" some of the documents (interpret: willfully destroyed).

Look for the democrats to escalate their attacks. They will need to do something to get the attention off of them, and back on their imagined and invented crimes of the President.

(Am I jaded or what?)

Thank you for posting this. This needs to be spread far and wide. Wonder if the Hill will reprint this?

Would you repost as a stand alone post. I am sure I am not the only one who has forgotten this, and the threads are getting very, very long and hard to get through.

Thanks.

Has anyone been over to the DUh to see what the idiots are saying about this yet.

It's all a lie by the BushCo Big Oil/Halliburton/VRWC/Conservative Media/Military-Industrial Complex attack machine!! Stuffing those classified documents in his socks was completely innocent and inadvertent! MorOn.org will be filing a hate-crimes suit against anyone who believes it!!

Berger's criminal acts are more proof of the connection between Iraq/Saddam and 9-11/Osama! Berger wouldn't have stolen these documents had he not been trying to hide the connection, a connection that would clearly lead back to Willie.

Willie could have stopped 9-11!! The Commission's job was to block any investigation of Willie's connection to Iraq/Osama and any cash that may have passed.

Let's talk about making the documentary which now places the burden of 9-11 squarely on the dems and on Clinton! Begre's crimes clearly prove this! Let's make sure he and Willie don't get off the hook!!

Darin Kagen on CNN was just speaking with Jeffrey Toobin. Toobin conceded there's a difference between folding a document and placing it in your jacket inside pocket out of habit (ookay) and stuffing them in your socks and pants.

I didn't follow his story, but evidently Toobin was investigated and cleared of similar charges in the past. Removing documents. Hm.

They were pretty good at both conceding something looks wrong here, though to wait for more info. They were not as craven as Gergen's defense this morning.

Yeah, this story has socks!

LOL, legs, "socks" and other assorted bits of dirty laundry. I'd sure like to know what really motivated him to do such a stupid and unlawful thing. Somebody got something on him?

If this happened FIVE times, why is it that the people at the archives called a CLINTON lawyer and not the FBI? What the heck is up with that? It's my understanding that if you see mishandling of classified documents you are REQUIRED to report it to authorities, not to a dixie mafia consigliore.

Everyone knows there is a MAJOR difference in the above scenarios.....except Gergen and the liberal media.

He accidentally inadvertently stole documents, five times.

Anyone remember the movie "What's Up Doc?" when the thug is ordered to delay the old woman from getting to her hotel room?

He repeatedly trips her, apologizes, helps her up and trips her again. Over and over, all the way to the elevator. Then they ride the elevator up to her floor and as soon as she steps out into the corridor, he starts again, tripping her, helping her up, apologizing, etc.

Each time she was expected to believe, "oops, just an accident." It's a very funny scene, and just as subtle as Berger's story.

I bet he didn't do it five times, which is the number they are saying Berger did.

And I think his excuse is ridiculous; he wasn't taking NOTES; he was taking DOCUMENTS.
