PARTISAN MISTAKE
New York Post ^ | July 20, 2004 | John Podhoretz

Posted on 07/20/2004 6:24:35 AM PDT by OESY

The 10 members of the 9/11 Commission are releasing their big report this week. Under other circumstances, the issuance of this document could have made them the toasts of America — the wisest of the wise, the cool-headed analysts who sorted through all the data and information and made important judgments that would help make this country safe.

Instead, the report will effectively be dead on arrival.

The administration has no reason to take the recommendations seriously, because the commission's members did such an astonishing job discrediting themselves last spring. The supposedly bipartisan commission unexpectedly became a partisan tool, a sledgehammer to be used for the destruction of the Bush administration.

What's most astonishing about their conduct is this key truth: Had the Democrats on the commission kept their mouths shut and their hearings bland, their report could have damaged the administration beyond salvage. Had they bided their time and behaved with sober restraint, the commission's very partisan Dems could have helped John Kerry beyond his and their wildest dreams.

But rather than going for the big knockout punch, the committee's Democrats kept on with the cheap shots. They pretended that a vague August 2001 one-page document was the smoking gun that proved the administration was to blame for failing to prevent 9/11 and turned the testimony of the disgruntled ex-employee Richard Clarke into a media feeding frenzy.

They allowed the committee's staff to issue blistering reports (including one whose executive summary claimed falsely there had never been any relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda) even as they were supposedly still engaged in fact-finding. The commission's members went on TV so frequently in the spring that it became reasonable to ask whether they were actually investigating anything.

...

The saddest case is that of Bob Kerrey, the former senator who yelled at Condi Rice for five minutes because he said he wouldn't have the opportunity to speak truth to power again. Having made such a big stink about access in the public hearing with Rice, he felt free to leave the White House early when the commission was interviewing President Bush and Vice President Cheney because he had a lunch date on Capitol Hill.

Once a serious candidate for the presidency, Kerrey now seems like little more than a flake.

...

The commission wants an "intelligence czar" — someone who doesn't run anything but supposedly has budgetary authority over the various moving parts of the federal government that do spying.

Ask anybody who's worked for or been a "czar" in the federal government whether such a job might be functional. The answer will be no.

How?

Well now I think we all know why the Commission does not want their report to be taken seriously.

Will this report include Sandy Berger stealing classified documents to pervert the record? I think not.

Sandy Berger pretty much closed the book on 9/11. Everyone now say "thank you Hillary."

Kind of a pity that this report will be D.O.A., because one of the recommendations is that the CIA get the funding to double the number of agents in the field, effectively returning it to the humint staffing levels it had in 1991.

This, plus Sandy Berger stuffing classified documents down his pants...

Well they have more than NO credibility. I just wonder if Bergers dual purpose in stealing classified docs was to keep damaging evidence against the evil Dums from reaching the light of day?

Evil Dums will do ANYTHING to destroy this country. It's no accident that Berger is a Kerry advisor. Payoff for "losing" classified Docs?

That struck me as odd too - why make such a strong statement and then "forget " to back it up? Must be another case of a Dim trying to act as if he's being objective, while the real object is to start another rumor.

How?

By dropping "the bomb" all at once, as a perfect setup/lead-in the the DNC convention. Instead, the trickle of partisan cheap shots has seriously limited the comission's impact.

That whole commission is flaky.

The dems on the Commission did exactly what they set out to do: avoid an investigation of the connection between Iraq/Saddam and 9-11/Osama Bin Laden and protect Clinton. As ever, everything else was a diversion.

Willie could have prevented 9-11 by killing Osama. But, through the late 90s, he was taking Iraqi oil voucher money (and, maybe some Saudi money) to back off on pulling the trigger on OBL. Willie could have zapped him several times but didn't.

The dems, over the past 2 months, have been in full lie mode, screaming that there couldn't be a connection between 9-11 and Iraq and that anyone who said there was was an idiot. That, and this report clearly prove a cover up and that Willie, as always, is dirty. They only lie like that to protect Willie. Any investigation of the connection would lead back to Willie.

But, destruction of the paper trail is Willie's specialty. His sewer dwellers are experts at it. That's what Berger was doing, destroying evidence that Willie could have easily stopped 9-11 and that he was taking Iraqi oil voucher cash (through the same Mark Rich that he later pardoned).

The primary objective of the dems on the Commission was never "to discover" but "to prevent the discovery of" facts about 9-11. They were protecting Willie and, as usual, have done that well.

That's true, but they never really had a "bomb." Maybe they honestly thought they were going to find one, but since several of the people on the commission seem to have been personally responsible for the intelligence failures themselves, that's a little hard to believe.

I think they dribbled it out because that would give it maximum coverage and would also require the least proof. Once again, innuendo would do it all.

I can't see it - 8 months in office trumps 8 years in office, no matter how the partisan media wants it spun. Even Joe Sixpack can do that math..

Right. 8 months and no warning from the guys who were there for 8 years. Apparently the findings of this report, which emphasized AQ and Muslim terrorism, were not included in the security audit that Clinton handed over to Bush (which had not one single mention of AQ). So these docs languished on their shelf at the archive until somebody ....cue the music from Jaws...remembered they were there...

I thought berger was given copies of the documents, not the originals themselves. Aren't the originals still in the national archives?

Anyone know the answer to this?

The Clinton drill is to destroy ALL records, not just copies, leaving the orginals for some one else to use. Willie destroyed his "I hate the US military" letter and we would never have known about it had some officer kept a private copy.

I'm not certain, but my bet is that originals were destroyrd to protect Willie from proof that he could have prevented 9-11. That was the whole point of the silly commission, to ensure that no one looked at Willie or the cash he took from Saddam to leave OBL alone.
