AP: Clinton Adviser Probed in Terror Memos

WASHINGTON - President Clinton (news - web sites)'s national security adviser, Sandy Berger, is the focus of a criminal investigation after admitting he removed highly classified terrorism documents from a secure reading room during preparations for the Sept. 11 commission hearings, The Associated Press has learned.
Berger's home and office were searched earlier this year by FBI (news - web sites) agents armed with warrants. Some drafts of a sensitive after-action report on the Clinton administration's handling of al-Qaida terror threats during the December 1999 millennium celebration are still missing.
Berger and his lawyer said Monday night he knowingly removed handwritten notes he had taken from classified anti-terror documents he reviewed at the National Archives by sticking them in his jacket and pants. He also inadvertently took copies of actual classified documents in a leather portfolio, they said.
"I deeply regret the sloppiness involved, but I had no intention of withholding documents from the commission, and to the contrary, to my knowledge, every document requested by the commission from the Clinton administration was produced," Berger said in a statement to the AP.
Berger served as Clinton's national security adviser for all of the president's second term and most recently has been informally advising Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites). Clinton asked Berger last year to review and select the administration documents that would be turned over to the commission.
The FBI searched Berger's home and office with warrants earlier this year after employees of the National Archives told agents they believed they witnessed Berger put documents into his clothing while reviewing sensitive Clinton administration papers, officials said.
When asked, Berger said he returned some of the classified documents, which he found in his office, and all of the handwritten notes he had taken from the secure room, but said he could not locate two or three copies of the highly classified millennium terror report.

What live thread was that? What was the date?
Oh and Kerrey.
I wonder if the phone logs indicate that those idiots had contact with the Kerry campaign.
This whole thing stinks. We have a motley crew Leftist hacks-- Kerry, Soros, Moore, the Rats on the Commission, Wilson and Berger-- whose judgement, integrity and love of country should be questioned.
bttt
Clinton said he tried to brief Bush on bin Laden but Bush changed the subject.
Supposedly Kerry is his own man, supposedly he fights the Clintons- only invites Hillary to intro the 'Toon under pressure, BUT, Kerry staff full of ex-'Toon people etc etc.
I think it's rigged, Billary is still running the show, and the aim is to put a surrogate President in- behind the Waffler will be the Klintons again, pulling the strings.
Yes she did. IIRC was she not Bruce Lindseys girlfriend?
Take with a grain of salt right now,Newsmax is queer sometimes.
ping
Oh .. now I remember .. it was about the prison scandal
it was about a document that Hellary claim to have known about BEFORE the Defense Department got it
Different Scandal .. move on
I think you are correct. There must be more to this story. With the 9/11 Commission report due out, I would not be surprised if Attorney General Ashcroft has been busy investigating members of the commission or even a particular member of the commission who he humiliated during his testimony. Maybe he was giving her a warning. Who knows. I am really just speculating. Big time. And that means it is time for me to quit typing.
BTW, I just recalled something. Someone on behalf of the Clinton administration raised a hue and cry about the Bush administration not sending the commission all the documents that were available from the Clinton administration files. The Bush administration said there were a bunch of duplicates of things that had already been sent but they would forward the boxes the Clinton people were having a hissy fit about "not being turned over". The media predictably took the talking points and reported it as if the Bush people were trying to withhold information from the commission. It indeed turned out that most were duplicates.
I'll see if I can find it in a bit...I can't look this minute. Anyone else recall this? It could be that once certain documents were removed then make a big deal about how "We're cooperating here but the Bush people won't let us" or some such rot. I remember thinking at the time it was damned odd.
Ollie is back over in Iraq. I'd love to hear his take on this.
Or iced tea. Or mint iced tea.
...Hell, tea of some kind is going to be mentioned before this flares out.
USA TODAY has the same AP story. Yes, it says he's a Kerry advisor...just before it says: "...Clinton asked Berger last year to review and select the administration documents that would be turned over to the commission." They got to pick and choose what the commission saw?!!! Whatta joke.
I remember she played the race card big time on the floor of the Senate.
Disgraceful.
With luck, she's involved in this, too.
I'm following your deductions here. Most interesting.
The site I use as my home page, GoGov.com, had it up this afternoon.
Sandy Rosenberger should have been jailed years ago for helping to facilitate the transfer of atomic secrets to China -- and now here he is 6 years later caught with his hands in the cookie jar again. I hope Ashcroft handles him better than Reno.
Same here. I'm wondering why it has been kept quiet for lo these six months.
How appropriate that, if Berger was doing this to CCA (cover Clinton's behind), he should have to stoop to putting the documents down his pants.
