WASHINGTON - President Clinton (news - web sites)'s national security adviser, Sandy Berger, is the focus of a criminal investigation after admitting he removed highly classified terrorism documents from a secure reading room during preparations for the Sept. 11 commission hearings, The Associated Press has learned.
Berger's home and office were searched earlier this year by FBI (news - web sites) agents armed with warrants. Some drafts of a sensitive after-action report on the Clinton administration's handling of al-Qaida terror threats during the December 1999 millennium celebration are still missing.
Berger and his lawyer said Monday night he knowingly removed handwritten notes he had taken from classified anti-terror documents he reviewed at the National Archives by sticking them in his jacket and pants. He also inadvertently took copies of actual classified documents in a leather portfolio, they said.
"I deeply regret the sloppiness involved, but I had no intention of withholding documents from the commission, and to the contrary, to my knowledge, every document requested by the commission from the Clinton administration was produced," Berger said in a statement to the AP.
Berger served as Clinton's national security adviser for all of the president's second term and most recently has been informally advising Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites). Clinton asked Berger last year to review and select the administration documents that would be turned over to the commission.
The FBI searched Berger's home and office with warrants earlier this year after employees of the National Archives told agents they believed they witnessed Berger put documents into his clothing while reviewing sensitive Clinton administration papers, officials said.
When asked, Berger said he returned some of the classified documents, which he found in his office, and all of the handwritten notes he had taken from the secure room, but said he could not locate two or three copies of the highly classified millennium terror report.

LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL!
Boy, are you naive. These morons spent $100 million going to see "Farenheit 911"!
Don't underestimate the total stupidity of the American people! They gave Gore 550,000 more popular votes!
Jayna Davis will be all over this if there are implications for OKC.
Something quite like it. LOL
This just in: New Necked Photos from Abu Ghurab!
No,it won't be.
No,this time it's going to stick. There's a video of Berger stuffing documents down his pants, for crying out loud.
I think the dots connect fairly easily on this one. It may lead to the unravelling of OKC and TWA Flight 800. These people lied about everything.
doug, you know I'm not a "big picture" person; sketch it out for me, will ya?
Oh, MAN...
Holy crap! I didn't even think of that. Of course, the documents were inadvertently disposed of. Dang.
If there was .. I don't remember reading about it
There's a video? I must have scanned the articles too fast.
It's in the N.Y. Post!
OCTOBER 27, 1996: (MANSOOR IJAZ COMMENTS ON MEMO HE SENT TO SANDY BERGER) In a confidential memorandum I [Mansoor Ijaz] wrote to Sandy Berger to follow up on the August 1996 meeting he and Susan Rice (then a National Security Council official) had called me to the White House for to discuss U.S.-Sudan relations, I recounted events of my first meeting with the new Sudanese intelligence chief, Lt. Gen. Gutbi al-Mahdi, just days earlier a meeting whose consequence even I did not fully grasp at the time:
the purpose of my meeting [with al-Mahdi] was to see if we could glean any insights into the data Sudan has on those who have been attending the Popular Arab & Islamic Conference meetings convened by [Sudan's theological leader Hassan] Turabi. As you recall, during our August meeting, I told you I thought this data could be invaluable in genuinely assessing terrorism risk from Sudan and neighboring countries His [al-Mahdi's] central contention is that Sudan is prepared to share data on those people attending the conferences and belonging to banned groups, such as Hamas, Hezbollah, Egyptian Islamic Jihad, Jamaah Islamiyah, and others, if we are prepared to genuinely engage and incent the Sudan away from its present course. He complained bitterly about repeated efforts to communicate with the administration, which are as I understand it, being blocked at very low levels because of what he called "blind spots."He showed me some files in which the data seemed pretty compelling names, bio data like dates and places of birth, passport copies to show nationality, recent travel itineraries in some cases and a brief description of each individual to delineate which groups they claim loyalties to. In short, it seemed to me everything we discussed in August was available. Strongly suggest we test the Sudanese on the data, perhaps even try to get at the data on an unconditional basis
Berger's secretary, Kris, confirmed he had received and read the memo. Berger's reply: We'll evaluate this after the election. Election day came and went. No action was taken. - "The Clinton Intel Record
Deeper failures revealed. ," by Mansoor Ijaz, National Review Online, 4-29-2003
Gorelick's Wall?
This will be decided by the courts, So the stupidity of the American People who support these fools will be taken out of the equation. Since the Republicans Chair the committee's, they will control the hearings, IMHO this is the best opportunity we might have to ferret out a bunch of the crooks who run the DNC
I hope you don't mean the "A Team" that calls for Cheney's removal because they've been suckered by the "Halliburton" lies.
Look, I'm doing my best to tick people off to go prove me wrong. But right now, it's obvious Bush, because of his own stupidity, is in trouble.
Will we elect a far left liberal ticket? Farther to the left of Mondale and Dukakis? The answer is yes simply because no one pays attention any longer. If the GOP was smart they'd create music videos, computer games and mindless sitcom and reality TV shows. That's the only thing people understand.
The Chinese communists could invade the U.S. enmass and call it "Hot Chinese Guys Looking For Marriage" on Tuesdays at 10 pm and 80% of Americans, the idiots that they are, would buy into the concept.
Pessimism? Hardly. Reality is more the word. I see it everyday. I work with these morons and I have to supervise them to the point it's borderline that I don't rip their stupid heads off. And, as usual, the stupider they are, the more opinionated they seem to be.
Always good to chat with you. See you around in maybe another 3 months since that seems to be my new pattern!
