Not sure if the photo was doctored, but it was from a real event in 1998 in Afghanistan (Feb I think) when they announced the merger of Zawahiri's Egyptian Islamic Jihad with AQ to form the Worldwide Front, the present-day form of AQ.

They had only a very few reporters (maybe 3?) invited. I think that was al Jazeera footage. One of those 3-4 journalists invited to record the event was from the Chinese state press.

I don't think you're OVERreacting in these times. However, do try to remember that 99 times out of 100 our fears turn out to be worse than reality. So I'll hope and pray along with you that this is one of those 99 times. And do let us know when you hear anything more.

BTW, have you tried to contact any authorities (either here or there)? Not airline people, but perhaps his hotel, or even our FBI (or whoever would handle an international "missing person" case if it came to that). Perhaps they can get some info that you can't, and they can set your mind at ease.

Could be, JP. Anything is possible,and the threat of hoaxes never changes. We spend alot of time on hoaxes here on TM and on every other board. All the alphabets do too, so why shouldn't we! ;)

It is great to identify a hoax when it is possible. But there are different hoaxes. There are hoaxes that are psych-ops on the part of real jihadis and wannabe jihadis; there are hoaxes that are government lures; and there may be hoaxes from other folks with different agendas of which we are not aware.

Some hoaxes are good and provide valuable information to the folks that are seeking it. I think this is the case with the anime sites.

But some hoaxes turn out to be real.

In the end, it is all part of the hunt.
