Letters From The Enemy
Pro Choice America ^ | July 17, 2004 | myself (editorial), and unknown author (news column)

It's encouraging to log on to Free Republic and see all the good folks out there who are concerned for the future of our freedoms and our republic. It's good to see people who are willing to speak out against the enemies of all that is good in this nation.

I do wonder sometimes, though, if we conservatives and libertarians are even fully aware of exactly what it is that our enemies think and do. For that very purpose, I decided to start a series of threads called "Letters From the Enemy." These are articles and such that I have found from organizations and entities which are antithetical to the freedom and decency of America.

So here goes. The first installment of "Letters From The Enemy" is upon you. Read and learn; these words are straight from the lions' mouths.

"Choice News Weekly

"A Review of the Week’s News on Reproductive Freedom

"Week of 06/21/04

"Things got weird in Washington last week. The U.S. Senate voted to expand coverage for abortion services for women in the military and President Bush endorsed condom use abroad. Well, wait a minute. The Senate quietly passed the amendment without a recorded vote, and Bush didn’t really endorse condoms so much as he mildly acknowledged that after abstinence condom use may sort of be an OK option. But, it felt so good there for a minute.

"Missouri Court Blocks Enforcement of Anti-Choice Law – Again

"First off, it's been a good week for pro-choice Missourians! A federal court stopped the biased counseling and mandatory delay law (HB 156) from being enforced - again. The same court issued a similar order last October, but two weeks ago an appellate court lifted that order, allowing the law to take effect. The case was then sent back to the lower court, which this week issued another injunction prohibiting the state from enforcing the law until the case is complete. This is especially good news for the women of Missouri, since the affected clinics were forced to turn away numerous women seeking abortion services the last time the law took effect. Read more from The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, The Associated Press, and The Kansas City Star.

"Easy as A.B.C.

"In a move that caused much of the pro-choice community to see pigs flying past their office windows, George Bush used the “C” word in a recent speech to a church-affiliated group. Bush acknowledged that Uganda’s A.B.C. approach to the prevention of AIDS is a good program - the “C” representing condom use. Though we never thought Bush would use the words “appropriate” and “condoms” in the same sentence, we are under no delusion that this changes his position as a virulently anti-choice president. It was a nice, if somewhat belated, acknowledgement, though. As blogger Wonkette noted sarcastically: “In related news, the White House warned audiences that Darth Vader is actually Luke's father and said that Homeland Security has many leads on who shot J.R.” Read more from The New York Times.

"Senate Approves Expanding Abortion Services for Servicewomen who are Victims of Sexual Assault

"This week brought positive news for women in the military and pro-choice champions Sen. Boxer and Sen. Snowe as their amendment was included in the final National Defense Authorization Act (FY 2005). This would result in the expansion of federally funded abortion services for servicewomen to include cases of rape and incest in addition to cases where the life of the woman is endangered, (which are covered under current law), so that servicewomen would at least have parity with those who receive medical coverage from Medicaid. The Senate passed the amendment very quietly last Thursday, without a recorded vote. Sadly, this language will more than likely be stripped from the bill when it reaches the House-Senate conference stage. Despite the valiant efforts of Boxer and Snowe, it is unlikely that women in the military will ever receive this expanded healthcare.

"Two down and one to go

"The second of three cases protesting the federal abortion ban wrapped up this week as final arguments were delivered in a New York courtroom. A court in California has already ruled the abortion ban to be unconstitutional, and the Nebraska trial continues. Even if the New York court follows California’s lead and strikes down the ban, a woman’s right to choose will still hang in the balance. As the Department of Justice is likely plotting further judicial action in the case of California, it will undoubtedly do the same for the New York trial and the Nebraska trial as well if need be. You’ve heard it a thousand times, but it bears repeating, it is vital – for women’s lives and health, and for the right to privacy of all Americans – that George Bush not be the one appointing Supreme Court Justices. The Associated Press has more.

"Senate psyches us out: Confirms Diane Sykes

"On Thursday night, the Senate confirmed anti-choice Diane Sykes to the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. This brings the number of demonstrably anti-choice appellate judges appointed by Bush to 11, nearly one-third of his 37 circuit court appointments. The vote on Sykes came as part of a deal reached among Senate Republicans, Democrats, and the White House to break an impasse on the nominations process that had taken hold in wake of President Bush’s two sneak-attack style recess appointments earlier this year. As part of the compromise, the Senate agreed to vote on two anti-choice nominees, Diane Sykes and James Leon Holmes of “the wife is to subordinate herself to her husband” fame. Beware of a Holmes vote coming to a Senate floor near you.

These are the same people who declare that people on the right are uncaring, mean spirited bigots. Glad to see they take our national security so seriously and spit on the memories of those who died Sept 11th.

Yes, hate is never far from these people. Mean-spirited is too light a word for them. Hateful is more appropriate.
