AIM Shuts down when Laptop is Closed? (vanity)
vanity

Posted on 07/17/2004 12:54:41 PM PDT by sdk7x7

FReepers, I need some help. I just got a new laptop. When I close it up, I guess it goes into sleep mode. For some reason it automatically signs out of AOL Instant Messenger. Any idea how to stop this? I want to be able to close the laptop and leave AIM on w/ an away msg up.

Thanks, I appreciate it in advance. -SK

I wish I could help you, but sometimes I am electronically challenged...but will watch for the answer in case I get a new laptop.

Assuming that you are using Windows XP, go to control panel/power options/advanced. Set you system to "do nothing" when you close the lid.

It sounds like a security design of AIM. They way I figure it, you want to be able to close your laptop (suspend) for a trip to the head and not have somebody in your IM account.

IM is an open door to viruses and other nasty things. Be glad that it shuts down.........

Go to control panel and select power options. You can configure what action to take when you close the cover. If it goes into suspend or hibernate, it will shut down AIM. Don't forget that it will continue to use the battery, a small amount in suspend, continuously if it isn't in suspend or hibernate.

Set you system to "do nothing"

With XP, I thought that was the default (sorry about that - I couldn't resist).

think of it this way: Sleep mode = off. If you don't want your computer to log off of AIM, don't turn it off, or go into sleep mode.

Listen, I just got out of Win 98 Hell. For me XP is like a breath of fresh air. I am planning to switch to Linux, however.

I was just yanking your chain a little. Actually, I currently use OSX and Solaris 9 (at home). I also am planning to add some Linux servers in the near future.

I should have known there was a MAC man behind that post. I really, really do hate Microsoft (more than dog sh!t on my shoe, but less than John Kerry), but I can't bring myself to buy a MAC or a Volvo.

I wasn't trying to be sarcastic. I'm still learning tweaks, tricks, etc. and it's refresing to see how many freepers are good with computers. When you're good you're good.

I don't really know much, but my 20's something son is a committed computer geek and I pick up a trick or two from him. Sorry if I sounded iritated.

  1. Go to your telephone
  2. Call AOL 'Tech Support' (1-800-382-5265)
  3. Then make some Veal Cordon Bleu while you're on hold
  4. When they answer and IF they speak English tell them....
  5. "I want to cancel my account YESTERDAY"
  6. Then get a real ISP

That will $100.00, thank you
