U.S. Rep. Mel Watt, D-N.C., denied Thursday that he ever cursed at presidential candidate Ralph Nader.
Nader has accused Watt of directing an "obscene epithet" -- the f-word -- against him when Nader met June 22 with members of the Congressional Black Caucus in Washington.
Watt is a member of the caucus.
"I emphatically deny that I used the 'f' word or any curse word or other 'obscene epithet' in the meeting," Watt said in a statement.
Watt said he has confirmed with other caucus members and staff who attended "that Mr. Nader's version of what transpired is untrue in a number of respects."
Earlier in the week, a Watt spokesman had denied that the congressman cursed at Nader.
"I have tried to ignore Mr. Nader for the last several weeks, during which time he has had at least three different versions -- each more untruthful -- of what I said in the CBC meeting," Watt said.
Nader reportedly had a tense meeting with the caucus June 22 where Watt and others argued against his presidential candidacy.
After the caucus meeting, Nader and Watt conducted separate national radio interviews. In his, Nader first leveled the charge that Watt used abusive language against him.
Watt later said he didn't think he was being abusive, just honest.
Earlier this week, Nader wrote a letter to Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., leader of the Black Caucus, that complained that Watt used an obscene "racial epithet" twice, and he included at the bottom of the letter what those "exact words" were.
Nader later told reporters that Watt shouted the slur.
But both the Watt spokesman and a caucus staff member said they did not hear the f-word from Watt.
Watt labels Nader's presidential bid as "an arrogant ego trip."
"It appears that Mr. Nader is willing to go to any lengths, including being untruthful, in his desperate attempt to get national attention," Watt said.
"It seems appropriate to ask why Mr. Nader would hold press conferences, go on talk shows and conduct a public discussion about statements made in a private, off-the-record meeting," he said.
