EAST WENATCHEE, Wash. -- When the Washington state Department of Employment Security notified Sandi Bryan that she owed money for an unemployment compensation overpayment more than six years ago, she picked up the phone.
Little good that did -- until word that she was being threatened with court action over a nickel reached the right ears.
Bryan told The Wenatchee World she asked the state employee who took her call on a toll-free line whether she should mail in a nickel taped to a piece of paper....

I remember in college getting a letter from the college library that I was overdue on a book and the fine was 25 cents. It cost them 27 cents (plus paper, envelope, time, etc...) to mail me the letter.
She knows. The answer is just too embarrassing.
I got an invoice just before graduating college for $0.00. I had to go to the office and pay them their $0.00 before I could graduate.
I hope you paid with a hundred dollar bill and asked for change......
NeverGore
It's a good thing you had it!
You should have paid it all in pennies.
I started college at 25, was married with 1 kid. My second kid appeared between Sophomore & junior year. we were piss pot poor, but i managed to scrape up the whole $0.00, but just barely!
They only accepted checks. The people at the bank laughed when I told them the story.
I had one like this with the IRS. Except they also said the payment was late so they were penalizing me with a $250 late fee for not paying the $0.00 on time.
That's a scary one! The IRS are the one's who got Al Capone!
Or, maybe she doesn't know, which would also be embarassing.
Seems to me we ought to switch the IRS for the FBI. The IRS is a meaner, tougher outfit. The FBI couldn't find its a** with both hands.
Business does it too. I once had an AT&T calling card. I canceled it about 3 1/2 years ago. I moved three years ago, and did not tell them of my change. For this whole length of time I get a statement from them every month saying I AM OWED $1.23! They owe me money!! I got my latest waste of postage Monday.
That's a Catch 22. After you got the penalty notice, you owed them!
How did you resolve it..?
I had the same problem with them. Just call them up and they'll write it off. I was owed $0.04. They wrote me three times to tell me this, until I got tired of hearing from them and told them to close the account.
Most competent businesses write off accounts at a certain point. One place I worked wrote off all accounts at +/- 5 dollars. Made sense to me.
So did she pay the nickle or what?
lol
I have reached the point where I am just going to let them mail it to me to see how kerrying stupid these morons are.
