Ron Reagan, the younger son of the late Republican president, announced this week that he would give a prime-time address in support of stem cell research (search) at the Democratic National Convention in Boston later this month.
"Ron Reagan's courageous pleas for stem cell research add a powerful voice to the millions of Americans hoping for cures for their children, for their parents and for their grandparents," said a spokesman for John Kerry to the Associated Press.
Reagan told the Philadelphia Inquirer that the speech was intended "to educate people about stem cell research" rather than be critical of President George Bush. But the Kerry campaign seems to want to scare people by having the son of the revered late President Ronald Reagan decry President Bush and his pro-life supporters as the major roadblocks to a host of supposedly just-around-the-corner miracle cures for cancer, Alzheimer's, diabetes and other dreaded diseases.
The spectacle of Ron Reagan at the Democratic Convention will be sad — the disgruntled son of the beloved former president misleading the public with naive hopes while being exploited for political gain by opponents of his father's party. That cynical strategy may get John Kerry a few more votes in November, but it's not going to produce any medical miracles anytime soon, if at all.

My great grandfather had parkinsons disease and lived for nearly 40 years with it. I just can't picture him saying that people should be forced to support dubious research or abortion so he could get better.

very good observation. The democrat party is the party of death: Abortion is their number one issue - it steers their every decision. Embryonic stem cell research is another. Which party has embraced Dr. Kevorkian's policies?
My granddad has Alzheimers, has had it for 5-6 years. He would never approve of this type of research even if it meant finding a cure.
Yeah, I agree. I am for research, but I don't think it should all be federally mandated/funded. With that said, I have no idea where to draw the line.
I get your point. This whole string of issues is tied together, and is indicative of liberal thinking. It all started with Roe v. Wade.

Not only are we NOT investing in embyonic stem cell research, no one is asking us to invest.
(This is significant, we get dozens of hairbrained business plans sent to us everyday)
Stem Cell research is the excuse, not the reason Ron Jr is doing this.

That is good to hear. I would have trouble if someone asked me to invest in that type of research.
He's also an embarassment to his father proclaiming he's an atheist. Hes a big liberal who's now being held up by the liberals and MSNBC has hired him as a political consultant. Mike Reagan is the real deal.

I think it started before RvW. the environment was there before the USSC decision. I think it started before FDR - and that it started from within the dem party, yet is not confined there, for JFK wasn't exactly liberal in his policies nor ecopnomics - he is actually the father of supply-side economics, dubbed reagonomics by the press.
We have a family member who could significantly benefit from this type of research. That being said, the government cannot get into the business of dealing with the after effects of abortion. But of course the Republicans never seem to make a clear concise argument on most issues and the Dems always distort the truth.

I understand. I can't get angry about it, though. He's been "acting out" for almost the last twenty five years in public, so this is just a continuation.

You may be right, but I am not really educated in political history. I only know what I have seen since I started paying attention in the 1980 election. I was a grand 9 years old then, and life was wonderful...no worries!
