WASHINGTON - Whoopi Goldberg lashed out at Republicans again yesterday, branding them hypocrites for trying to "punish" her for joking about the President.Fired from her gig as SlimFast spokeswoman, the salty entertainer hit back at Republicans who threatened a SlimFast boycott over sexual puns she made about President Bush's name at a Democratic fund-raiser.
"America's heart and soul is freedom of expression without fear of reprisal," she said in a statement.
"I find all this feigned indignation about 'Bush bashing' quite disingenuous," she said, noting the Bush administration has savagely gone after critics like former Sen. Max Cleland, Iraq whistleblower Joseph Wilson and ex-terrorism chief Richard Clarke.
"For the Republican Party to pretend this is new to them seems a little fake," she said.
"The fact that I am no longer the spokesman for SlimFast makes me sad, but not as sad as someone trying to punish me for exercising my right as an American to speak my mind."
The Bush-Cheney campaign has been making a lot of hay out of Goldberg's set at last week's celebrity gala at Radio City Music Hall, professing shock at her blue jokes.
Bush campaign manager Ken Mehlman called the event a "hatefest" that proves John Kerry doesn't "share the same values" as the rest of America.
Kerry, who is trying to woo swing voters, did not stand by his celeb supporters. On the defensive, he distanced himself from Goldberg and said through spokesmen that he thought her comments were inappropriate.
Running mate John Edwards was asked about the flap yesterday by Fox News. "They weren't speaking for me, and they weren't speaking for John Kerry," he said, adding the ticket is "focused on our positive, optimistic vision of hope."
Mehlman has repeatedly demanded that Kerry's camp release a video of the event, even going so far as to promise not to use the footage in ads.
Kerry campaign manager Mary Beth Cahill said tartly that he could have the video after Bush releases his military records and details of Vice President Cheney's secret energy task force.
Diversity promoter Asa Khalif, who has made headlines for accusing celebrities of insensitivity, cried foul in the Goldberg firing. "I smell racism from beginning to end," said Khalif, head of Racial Unity USA in Pennsylvania. "SlimFast must realize that black women have every right to voice their views."

Freerepublic rocks!
Hey Whoopi....you can say whatever you want to say and so can we...and we say WE WILL NOT BUY SLIM FAST....you were a PIG when they hired you and you are still a PIG.
Amazing that these idiots think that they can say and do whatever they want and that no private citizen has the same ability to criticize them
EXACTLY!!!!! That's what we have been saying all along and...that's exactly what I included in my email to SlimFast.
I called SlimFast this morning by the way and thanked them for taking the right and honorable road regarding Whoopi and her vulgar, trashy mouth which she now says was a joke. SlimFast was happy to receive my call and thanked ME for responding to their decision. The lady I spoke with said they have been receiving calls regarding the same things. So, tha's nice to call and thank them since we all wrote/called to complain. It was a good thing to do and seems SlimFast appreciates it too.
Jenny Craig hired dirt bag Monica, so I guess it's not all that unusual.
Maybe this used to be the case, but.. Whooopeee! is well on her way to has-been land. Her NBC show lasted.. three weeks maybe? She hasn't had a leading part in a movie in years. Wasn't her last so-called success when she revived 'Hollywood Squares'? and Whoopi's not on that anymore either (Is it still on?)
"A lot of people are going to be angry - there's a lot to be angry about," she told reporters at a fund-raising breakfast on Manhattan's west side. "It's a free country and people are going to express that anger."
I guess a lot of people were angry... with Whoopi that is; we just expressed our anger.
You're right....Kerry said that ALL the performers were the "heart and soul" of America!!!
It's not the GOP that got her fired, it was ALL OF US...You know, the people that got her SITCOM cancelled and those who show up to her movies dressed as EMPTY SEATS!!!
"Whoopi Goldberg lashed out at Republicans again yesterday, branding them hypocrites for trying to "punish" her for joking about the President."
This isn't a punishment Ms. Goldberg. This was a BUSINESS decision made by the CEO of a company who doesn't want a foul mouthed entertainer representing their product. This would have happened just as swiftly if it had been Jeff Foxworthy making sexual jokes about John Kerry and describing the Kedwards in vulgar ways at a RNC fundraiser.
But since it was a RAT that got fired she can claim victim status since they do have the corner on that racket.
Carl Cameron is a WEENIE....Most of Fox's reporters are Democrats...ala Wendell Goler....James Rosen...etc. Can't even watch them anymore.
She can always go to work for AirAmerica! (if she's willing to work for free)
She needs to pull that wire hanger from her first abortion back out and move on, ya know?
Was Whoopi really a great spokesman for Slimfast anyways? I mean, has she lost any weight?
I don't care if she is heavy, but it seemed kinda strange that they used her to promote weight-loss products.
Cleland - lied and claimed the Rs questioned his patriotism when they just cited his voting record.
Joseph Wilson - lied about his wife recommending him for Niger trip and about what he learned there.
Richard Clarke - lied on 60 minutes and in press interviews where he contradicted his own book.
Exacta-f'ing-mundo!
If these mondo-Hollywood morons would take the time to actually read the Constitution, they'd realize this. I have MY freedom of expression, too, and my freedom of expression was to tell your employer that you suck as a spokesperson and I wouldn't be buying their product anymore. And since you were now a liability and not an asset, they canned your skanky ass. No one put a gun to their heads.
So cry me a river, bitch.
I see you made the same comment I was about to highlight. Yes, how DARE the Bush administration call liars like Wilson and Clarke on their outrageous stories designed to bring down a sitting president. It's just not done in Whoopi's world. The left is supposed to be able to insult, defame and denigrate with nary a whisper of objection from their targets according to her narrow little view.
I acually loved her in "Ghost"...."Molly...you in danger, girl"!...always makes me laugh when I hear it.
Like this "positive and optimistic" comment from John Kerry yesterday before the NAACP:
"This president has a problem with the truth"
"I was mad that Carl Cameron was very soft in this interview. Why he did not ask Edwards about John Kerry statement at the end of the fundraising "every performer tonight represent the heart and soul of America"
He didn't have to ask the question, when everyone watching ask it themselves.
Subtle, but effective.
