NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Since 2000, developer id Software has told the world the next installment of "Doom," the game that kicked off the action genre, would ship "when it's done."

Good news, gamers: It's done. In the lexicon of the industry, "Doom 3" has gone gold. That means with id Software's work done, publisher Activision is duplicating copies to ship to retail. What it all boils down to is you'll be able to pick up a copy at retail on Aug. 5, though some stores could start selling the game as early as Aug. 3.

I remember playing Castle Wolfenstein 3D, but I really cut my teeth on the original DOOM. I would play for hours. I would get kinda sick too, from the 3D immersion effect or something. I called it "getting Doomed". I am hardly into Gaming anymore, but I'll probably pick up a copy of Doom III, just for old times sake.

Once again, entertainment rules our roost. Why a video game is of any significance to our economy remains one of life's great mysteries.

That's always been my problem with these first person shooters, though I'll probably get Doom III also. Diablo II is my favorite - it's "obsolete" by today's graphical standards, but the playability is such that I still play it all the time.

Hah! My younger brother is a Diablo GHOD! He has played that thing everyway including backwards, and plays till he wins out. Something that some game companies had forgotten, that game PLAYABILITY is key, graphics is secondary. Diablo is a very playable game.

Now that Doom III is "done", I wonder if the owner of the company, John Carmack, will put more effort into his X-prize rocket project.

I think the video game industry is even larger than the film industry now.

I just started playing it a few weeks ago -- still can't kill Duriel with my 26th-level assassin.

I like realistic (no monsters/zombies) games better. Call of Duty rocks. I might play the new Counterstrike when it comes out, though.

I love Diablo II,
Something about blowing demons to little bits at the end of the day that makes me smile.

Check the system requirements. From what I hear Doom III requires a serious gaming system.

My gaming background is the same as yours, except I've taken to the Playstation 2.

I will pick up Doom 3, as you said, for old times sake.
