You are right about the poem being paraphrased in the Challenger disaster speech. Written by Peggy Noonan, one of my favorite editorial writers...

Here is the last paragraph of the Challenger speech.

I sure did. And if my memory serves me correctly, I think the poem was used in the aftermath of the Challenger disaster. It is a beautiful poem. Thanks for posting it, along with its history.
i took my best girl out to lunch at La Fonda (a fancy tex-mex restaurant here in SA)yesterday.
she REALLY enjoyed same, but it was a REAL PROJECT to get her/LEG/BRACE/all her stuff into/out of the buick! (this is one time that i wished i had a van or suburban!).
i also took her to the nail salon for "refilling nails" & a pedicure, which she also ENJOYED!
she is only using her walker, when she/we leave the environs of the kitchen, bedroom & den. otherwise, she is getting around pretty well in that part of the house, w/o it.
the stitches MAY be removed next wednesday afternoon, but the Dr says that she must remain IMMOBILIZED in that (damned) brace for 6-8 weeks MINIMUM! (NOTE: i MAY go buy that van/suburban!)
her attitude is EXCELLENT, but she "wears out" FAST. (duckie is a FIGHTER & WILL beat this "thing" i believe.)
