DISD superintendent resigns

11:38 AM CDT on Wednesday, July 14, 2004

By TOYA LYNN STEWART and JOSHUA BENTON / The Dallas Morning News

Mike Moses announced Wednesday he is leaving the Dallas school district after 3 1/2 years leading Texas' second-largest school district.

During a news conference at DISD headquarters, Dr. Moses said he informed board members in a letter early Wednesday morning. His last day will be Aug. 31.

"Here's the deal: I'm tired," he said.

Dr. Moses said the job of DISD superintendent is "enjoyable and exhilarating, I think, but only for a period of time."

"I really thought when I came here that three years would be a pretty good tenure," he said.

"It's the point for me and my family to make this change," said Dr. Moses, who was accompanied by his wife, Debi. "I was doing a little reflecting and thinking about what would be good for the district and for my family."

Dr. Moses said he was willing to work with the district on a transition plan.

He added that he has not yet lined up his next job, although he hinted he might teach or work in higher education.

When Dr. Moses took over in January 2001, he became DISD's seventh superintendent in less than 10 years. His salary made him the highest-paid school district chief in America. Dr. Moses' contract, which pays $341,775 this year, runs through December 2006.

His successes in Dallas, including a record construction package and the end of more than three decades of federal court supervision related to desegregation, cause his supporters to blanch at suggestions that he might move on one day.

However, speculation has been circulating for months that Dr. Moses was preparing to leave the district. The superintendent has not addressed the talk directly.

Responding to the rumors last month, Dr. Moses said through a representative only that he was happy in Dallas.

DISD spokesman Donald Claxton quoted Dr. Moses as saying recently that "he is using the summer months as a time of reflection."

We need to start a pool to see who plays the race card first. Dallas may claim to be part of the west but it plays politics like it was on the east coast.

The lady that was superintendent a couple of folks back should be out of prison by now. Perhaps she could be a candidate.

Running the government schools is not an easy job. There are so many things you have to be sensitive about, and then there is even the matter of trying to teach 12th graders to read.

?\?nother round of the Latin vs. Black wars comes to a close. As usual, everybody loses.

Dallas, my once-proud hometown, is now more like one of those post-colonial African countries: an inchoate mass of squabbling tribes, each trying to secure for itself the greater share of the remains of the white man's abandoned stuff.

It was such a nice place to live once. Such a pity.

?\?nother round of the Latin vs. Black wars comes to a close.

The war itself may be drawing to a close with Whites generally exiting to the north, and Blacks generally exiting to the south:

DISD students: an ethnic breakdown
Hispanic 60.9%
African American 31.4%
White 6.3%
Asian/Pacific 1.1%
Other 0.3%
