WASHINGTON - Two former presidents, a group of vets and Sen. John F. Kerry's family won coveted prime-time speaking slots at the Democratic convention yesterday, as party leaders try to define Kerry by playing up his public service and military experience.
But several key Democrats did not make the initial list of speakers, including Kerry's former primary rivals Howard Dean [related, bio] and Al Sharpton.
Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.), Boston Mayor Thomas Menino - who feuded publicly with Kerry in recent weeks - and the Bay State's last presidential nominee, Michael Dukakis, also did not make the list.
Even Barack Obama, the Democratic Senate candidate from Illinois whom Kerry already had said will speak, was missing.
But campaign aides said other speakers will be added in coming days.
The convention's theme, ``Stronger at home, respected in the world,'' was unveiled in a release that used the words ``strong'' or ``strength'' 27 times.
Opening night, Monday, July 26, will feature former Vice President Al Gore and former Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton.
The second night will feature Sen. Edward M. Kennedy [related, bio] (D-Mass.) along with two key Democratic women, Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano and Christie Vilsack, wife of Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack.
Teresa Heinz Kerry will close out the night.
Wednesday night's main event belongs to vice presidential candidate Sen. John Edwards [related, bio] (D-N.C.), who will be introduced by his wife, Elizabeth.
The convention's finale Thursday will feature several of Kerry's Vietnam crewmates, including one whose life Kerry saved.
The senator's daughters, Alex and Vanessa Kerry, and stepsons, Chris and Andre Heinz, also will take the stage.
Former Sen. Max Cleland (D-Ga.), who lost three limbs in Vietnam, will introduce Kerry for his acceptance speech.
Teresa should be good for some laughs especially if shes up late and into the vin blanc.
I agree if his wife is going to speak its going to be good as gold for Bush! Maybe her and Teddy K can share the spotlight. Do you think the words B Ford clinic will come up?
"Butch" Napolitano's claim to fame is that she was Anita Hill's attorney. Who the hell is Christie Vilsack?
That kinda sums up what the demonrat party has become; that drunken old fool and that drunken sounding old dame.
hmm where is JJ or Sharpton? Where are any prominent blacks or hispanics?
They have to stay on The Plantation.

My wife has fleas!
That should be quite superficial, as any serious, in depth look at either record will reveal Kerry as the empty suit/uniform that he is, using a technicality to bail out on his crew in Vietnam after a measly four months, and a political career defined by zero notable legislation, and a voting record (when he used to vote, that is) supporting every anti-American, anti-military measure that came down the pike.
By all means!! Let them "play up" his record!!! LOL!! What a golden opportunity for the Republicans! I see an opportunity for some "purple heart bandaid" costumes at the convention!
Former Sen. Max Cleland (D-Ga.), who lost three limbs in Vietnam, will introduce Kerry for his acceptance speech.
And how did Cleland lose three limbs in RVN and not have a Purple Heart you ask?? Because he was fooling around with a Grenade while drinking....not very bright to say the least, but that's how Dem's become a heroes and get to introduce other phony heroes..
