The war on terrorism is again at Minnesota's front door. 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS has discovered federal authorities arrested a man who they suspect has terrorism ties. Federal sources tell us the man was arrested last Wednesday at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. Sources here in the Twin Cities and in Washington D.C. say that he arrived on a flight and was taken into federal custody. Along the way, customs agents found disturbing items in his possession.
The U.S. Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirms to 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS, Ali Mohamed Almosaleh is in federal custody here in the Twin Cities. He's being detained on an immigration law violation. But federal sources confirm, there is much more than that to this investigation. Sources confirm, when Almosaleh was arrested he was carrying a suicide note indicating a specific time and date for carrying out some sort of public suicide. He was also carrying CD's and DVD's, which federal sources say contained anti-American material. A source also confirms Almosaleh had something with him indicating a connection with at least one known terrorist.
Bill Michael is a terrorism expert. He says "One of the first things that comes to mind is is he actually going to do something that's the first concern. Second, if law enforcement believes he is, and now rightly so they take an overly safe approach and they try and determine what activity he might actually be planning to engage in."
Almosaleh arrived on a KLM flight last week. A source confirms he began his travels in Syria, stopped in Amsterdam before continuing to the Twin Cities. A federal source would not say where Almosaleh's final destination was, but that source did indicate it appears Almosaleh had plans to travel beyond the Twin Cities.
One federal official in Washington noted, this is a "very sensitive" investigation.

Another Al Qaeda sleeper agent?
Thanks for the heads up.
Well, I'm tellin' ya, not that I'm proud of it, but Mpls. is a hotbed here.
I saw this on the 10 0'clock and have been waiting for it to post. Apparently it looks like channel 5 broke the silence on last weeks arrest.
Funny, I was just at a bonfire (Mn thing) with some friends, one of whom works for the TSA at Mpls/St. Paul Int'l. I was commenting to one friend that we had more terrorists arrested here with Al Qaida ties than most. He disagreed and the TSA friend said nothing. He is very tight-lipped about his job. Wonder what he knew?
Did you possibly ask your TSA friend if just maybe they could start profiling a lot more? (I imagine that they do, but it seems like each and every moose limb that flies should be cavity checked.)
"....they take an overly safe approach...."
"So Harry, what do you think? We got the note, the DVD's, the immigration issues, etc.?" "Well Al, its probably nothing, but lets hold him just in case."
Me - I was thinking "hot DANG!" We got one before he could live up to his note. And sounds like lots of stuff for the feds to go over and hopefully get some intel from this guy.

Mohamad Kamal Elzahabi tied in with Zarqawi among other things, was hanging out in Minnesota.

According to court documents, about four years ago Warsame became interested in "the utopian Muslim society created in Afghanistan." While his wife and child lived in Minneapolis, he travelled there with other young men on their way to jihad training camps. At the camps he received military training in weapons, tactics and martial arts. He also allegedly fought for the Taliban twice on the front lines.
The documents also say Warsame attended lectures and ate with Osama Bin Laden during the same time al-Qaeda attacked the U.S.S. Cole while anchored at a harbor in Yemen

Moussaoui was arrested in Minnesota August 16 after officials of a flight school, the Pan Am International Flight Academy in Eagan, a suburb of Minneapolis, tipped off the FBI that he was seeking flight training on a Boeing 747 jumbo jet.
At least we're catching them here-so far.
I'm 12 miles south of MSP, right on the edge of any blast radius. Luckily, I'm sort of upwind.
Hopefully these are just small-timres.
Great way to look at it. You're an optimist, and that's good. I am looking at it more cynically wondering, if they caught these, how many more are around here?
btt
"...it appears Almosaleh had plans to travel beyond the Twin Cities."
Wasn't there some news the other day about rumors that terrorists planned arriving by air in Seattle-Tacoma?
It looks like we've definately got one in this case. Now, the question is, why are we still letting foreign national Muslim males into this country? The very last ones should have arrived on 9/10/01, there is no legitimate reason for ANY OF THEM to be coming here. If we wish to let in a very few well vetted individuals, maybe ok. But other than that anyone who hails from any Muslim nation should be kept out, even if they have passed through a Euro-country. Not sure what we can do about those carrying Euro passports.
Yup.
All you have to REALLY worry about is tornadoes, blizzards, and 30 below temperatures in February...and if you live near the Mississippi, of course, floods.
We had all of them when I lived in Minnesota (except we were near the Red River flood, not the Mississippi)...
worrisome bump.
After 9/11, I could hear the fighters patrolling over my house- I'm that close to the city. Yet, driving 5 min. in the other direction, and I'm in farm country.
And June. ;)
They said on the news that the terror case load for the FBI field office in MPLS is greater than that in Los Angeles or Chicago. With our Somali population and MN-nice-naivity, of course we're a stomping ground.
There was a meeting in Fridley the other nite concerning the expansion of a Muslim mosque or center which the residents in the area were opposed to.
It was quite painful to watch the people at the meeting explain to the Muslims why they did not want the huge expansion in their neighborhood, all the while practically contorting themselves to prove to the Muslims how much they love them.
