State warms to idea of Ditka candidacy
By Kathryn Masterson RedEye Published July 13, 2004
Could it happen? Could Mike Ditka really be the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate from Illinois?
When the news broke last week that a group had started a "Draft Ditka" Web site urging the former Bears coach to run for the U.S. Senate, it seemed like the quirky wish of Da Coach's fans.
But Monday, a Ditka candidacy edged closer to becoming-well, a possibility. He talked on TV about running, state GOP leaders said they had discussed the opening with Ditka, and Gov. Blagojevich declared him a qualified candidate.
The commotion grew when Ditka appeared on television Monday from his Chestnut Street restaurant and said a potential run for the seat of retiring Republican Sen. Peter Fitzgerald was on his mind.
"I'm getting excited about it, and I'm just thinking about it," Ditka told WGN-TV.

FREEPED AND BUMPED
Think of this possible situation - Mike Ditka, Patrick Leahy and Dick Cheney are in the same corner of the Senate floor, and Leahy nervously moves over next to Cheney, asking something to the effect, "I'm just a little scared of that guy, Mike Ditka....will you kind of shield me from him?"
"Why, sure, Patrick. Now go #^&% yourself."
BTTT
Are you or redwing keeping one, just so I know who to ping to articles, I don't mind reviving mine but it's silly to duplicate effort.
Ditka, well, not my choice, but he's probably electible, and he'd be fun to see in the Senate.
Like Arnold, Ditka will jump in at the last minute.
Like Arnold, Ditka has a broad based popularity that cuts across political ideology.
Like Arnold, Ditka can get crowds to follow him everywhere.
Like Arnold, Ditka will be running in an "overwhelming" Democrat state.
A state that elected Fitzgerald is NOT what I would call an overwhelming Democrat state. If that conservative pro-lifer can get elected, Ditka can walk into the office.
I think the Dems are terrified of a Ditka candidacy.
I think you're right, cause like Arnold, he's electable, and will have a (R) after his name. As good as a veep in a close vote.
