Chechnya's President Escapes Rebel Bomb Ambush

A roadside bomb tore through the motorcade of the acting president of warring Chechnya killing one person just two months after Chechnya’s previous leader was killed by a bomb.

Sergei Abramov, who was appointed to lead the Kremlin-backed Chechen government after the May 9 assassination of Akhmad Kadyrov, was not injured. The bombing came six weeks ahead of the scheduled election to choose Kadyrov’s successor.

The blast in the ruined Chechen capital Grozny harshly underlined Russian forces’ inability to purge insurgents from the city despite a massive troop presence and challenged Kremlin contentions that Chechnya is stabilising after nearly five years of war.

Hours before the blast, Chechen officials said 18 members of the presidential security forces and 24 rebels were killed in fighting about 20 miles southeast of Grozny, one of the bloodiest clashes reported in months.

The explosion that hit the convoy was believed to have been a land mine set off by remote control – a method frequently used by the separatist rebels to kill and demoralise Russian forces.

One of Abramov’s guards, who was in a car following the president’s, was killed and three others were wounded, Chechen Prosecutor Vladimir Kravchenko said.

ITAR-Tass said the motorcade was en route to inspect a construction site. Such inspection trips are an important symbolic component of the Chechen administration’s efforts to portray life as returning to normal in the capital, much of which is a jagged landscape of war-blasted buildings.

Russia, unable to defeat the rebels and refusing to negotiate with them, has focused on trying to undermine support for the militants with civic-improvement projects and by conducting elections in the republic.

But rebels and their supporters have inflicted a series of brazen terrorist acts, including the May explosion at a stadium that killed Kadyrov, the 2002 truck-bombing of the Moscow-backed Chechen government’s headquarters, which killed 72 people, and last year’s truck bombing of a military hospital treating soldiers wounded in Chechnya.

In other violence in Chechnya, three soldiers were killed in rebel firing on Russian positions and another was killed by a land mine, an official in the Chechen administration.

25 rebels killed in clash near Chechnya’s Avtury

13.07.2004, 19.10

GROZNY, July 13 (Itar-Tass) -- Twenty-five rebels were killed in a clash with a special task unit of the Chechen Interior Ministry on the outskirts of Avtury, Shali district, Chechen Deputy Interior Minister Col. Akhmed Dokayev told Itar-Tass.

“The rate may be even higher, as the clash zone near Avtury is still being searched,” he said. Besides, the federal artillery shelled an area where the rebels had been traced, he added.

But where is Shamil Basayev?

I find it hard to believe that he is still hiding in the Chechen-Ingush mountains.

If he were actually there, wouldn't there have been more sightings/reports of his whereabouts recently?

I think that Putin is cynically using the Chechnya issue as a war on terror front . i think basically while there are plenty of islamists there it is mainly a Commie V Islam issue. I hope they both destroy each other.

Who said I trust Putin? I am not a Russian and I wish no ill will to Russia and wish her all the luck in defeating the evil Muslim Chechens. I can see that you are an old man and in your mind the Russians are still the Soviets and are ready to collectivise your property and send you on a work farm. In reality the Russians are not seeking to collectivise my property and are recovering from the nightmare of communisim. They are not our automatic allies nor are they our automatic foes either. Oh, and old dude - the Kaiser is not comming back either so not to worry their either.

Perhaps you should read what Putin is doing to Russia's biggest company Yukos. Persecution of capitalism pure and simple. I can't see how anyone can possibly defend Putin's anti capitalism jihad . I just hope the evil Muslims and CAPITALIST HATING Russians take each other out . That is of course if you believe that destroying big companies for "Tax Debt" is somehow a conservative feature. I may be putting on the years sonny but i know socialism when i see it. I'd love to hear of your defense of Putin's genocide of Yukos for "Tax debts" . Good day.

Yukos is capitalisim? Yukos was formed by theft by theivies who ignored business and tax laws when the oligarchs under Yeltsin robbed Russia blind. Putin is attempting to reverse banana republic like policies of Yeltsin. Your "genocide for Yukos" line made me laugh. You must thing America is run by the red menace antichrist after our "genocidal" break up of AT&T into all those baby bells or the murderous break up of Standard Oil......
