Ron had a short lived talk show a few years ago. On one show, he interviewed Charles Manson at Manson's current cell of residence. Manson began "preaching" his "message". During it, he turned to Reagan and asked, "Do you believe in god?" "No, I do not," Ron responded.

Actually, when I really think about it, I've met people who were most demographic combinations imaginable who claimed to be Republicans. They may be outliers in some cases, but everyone has their reasons.

Here in San Francisco, there are a lot of liberals who plaster the rear of their cars with dozens of bumper stickers. One such car had multiple atheistic stickers, including one that screamed, "RELIGION IS BUNK - Edison."
The implication was that Edison was an atheist, but in fact, a review of his personal diary revealed that the quote "Religion is bunk" was made in the context that he dismissed ideas that devotees of one religion could lay claim that their conception and worship of the Almighty was definitely the only true way.

Nothing except it may explain to some degree why RR is advocating stem cell research. If you do not believe in the concept of a soul, it may make it easier to use a fertilized egg for research.

RON REAGAN: Well, we don't talk about politics all that much, particularly electoral politics. We talk about stem cell research, for instance, embryonic stem cell research, which she's (Nancy) very involved in and I think will continue to be very involved in.

This is something she takes very seriously, something I take very seriously, too. And it's shameful this administration has played politics with an issue that ... could be the biggest medical breakthrough in history. This could be bigger than antibiotics. This administration is pandering to the most ignorant segment of our society for votes and throwing up roadblocks to this sort of research. It's absolutely shameful.

Apart from Christ we are all idiots and lacking understanding. Some atheists will not even genuinely look into Christianity because of their arrogance, pride and bias. Actually some of them have no need for an external God because they already have one - themselves.

Or some of us were Christian and finally saw the light. I have no need to make myself god, because I have no need for a god, period. I know it's hard to understand, but people can live happy, productive, moral lives without having even the concept of a god in their lives.

BTW, notice I didn't limit the comment to atheists. I know many famously intelligent and wise non-Christians throughout Western history weren't atheists, but deists, agnostics, or other varying shades of non-belief in the Christian god. But according to Christian doctrine, all are going to hell and according to posters here, all were idiots.

I never liked her. Unlike many of religious persuasions, I won't defend people just because their beliefs are similar to mine. They have to stand or fall on their own demonstrated actions and morals.

One week, the world is his audience as he uses his father's funeral to trash the president.

The next week, he returns to his day job emceeing a dog show on Animal Planet.

Not quite the same stance. I don't even care if someone has exactly the same beliefs (or lack thereof) about religion as I do. I don't need to redefine them out of my belief because I know people do bad things regardless of their take on religion.

Simple test: Yes, Stalin and Pol Pot were atheists. See? No problem. It doesn't reflect poorly on atheism, just on them. Now show people Hitler's Christianity or remind them of the Huguenots and watch multiple invocations of the No True Scotsman fallacy.

The more Ron Prescott talks, the more it is apparent that he used his eulogy to his father to settle scores with not only the GOP and Bush, but with his sister and adopted brother, the latter of whom spoke of someday joining Ronald Wilson and his late sister Maureen in heaven.

As William F. Buckley implied, if this is the "mindfulness and loving kindness and compassion" that Ron's father taught him, it didn't take.
