Are the ingredients in place for a dirty bomb at the Fleet Center in Boston?

The headline reflects one of the many possible scenarios considered by the radical Islamists who want us all dead. They don't care if they kill Republicans or Democrats, hawks or war protestors, Rush Limbaugh or their pal Michael Moore.

Do they have a scenario for an attack on the DemocRATic National Convention at the Fleet Center in Boston scheduled for July 26-29? Consider the following:

ITEM: On or about April 8, 2004, a 9200-gallon fuel transport truck was stolen from TK Transport Terminal in Pennsauken, NJ. It has not been recovered.

ITEM: On April 21, 2004, two pieces of highly radioactive fuel rods were stolen from the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant. They have not been recovered.

ITEM: Hussain Al-Hussaini, implicated in the Oklahoma City bombing by Jayna Davis in her blockbuster, THE THIRD TERRORIST, has a last known location in, you guessed it, Boston, MA. Al-Hussaini has had several jobs at gas stations. He only works the graveyard shift, a shift at which a tanker truck might be filled over time without too much notice.

ITEM: Those in charge of security at the DNC convention are so worried about the close proximity of I-93 to the Fleet Center, that the freeway will be closed in both directions the four nights of the convention.

What are the plans to stop a fully loaded tanker truck? How close might it be able to get to the Fleet Center?

I am sure that DNC security officials, the FBI, local and state agencies, and the Secret Service have considered hundreds of scenarios. This is probably one of them.

However, if they attack the Democrats, then the left goes into full appeasement mode. The Dems would do a "Spain", and in their crying, they would pull some of the swing vote out of pure sympathy.

In total agreement.

Coal? I give up.

How is the freeway going to be blocked? By some cars and barriers? How would that stop the truck?

They could shoot it with a rocket propelled grenade before it gets to close. I saw that done on a movie once :)

More to the point, how do you get any significant amount of radioactive material into a population center, when there are detectors in place that can spot a person who has ingested isotopes for medical exams?

I won't say it can't happen, but it would require superhuman luck.

I was just at the airport last week, and every single parking spot has a sophisticated detector of some sort attached to a network. I know that ships and harbors are being scanned for explosives and radioactive materials. Anything highly radioactive would look like a lighted flare to a radiation detector.

When I was a kid, my neighbor used to brag about how good his Morris Minor was on gas. My cousins and I started slipping him some extra at night (gas was 32.9 cents/gal) and he would boast he'd be getting 60-70 mpg.

Then we ended our tactic and his car stayed in the shop for weeks at the time.

No, just adequate sheilding. As far as the Pu, uh, well, the Pu I dealt with was already in powder form. Maybe they'll just take your bars to Ali's Chop Shop and make some dust with a big wheel grinder. 8^)

..when collective breath is released...

Aha! When the guard is down. Brilliant. Italy seems a good choice, too, though I'm not so sure.

Try this one. Usually oddballs attach themselves to anti-American movements. I wonder why we haven't heard of any lately. You'd think they'd be everywhere, like back with the anthrax scares. Is security picking them up before they do anything? Are we not being told? Where have they all gone?

It's easier than you might think. Fuel deliveries aren't that accurate. The stores are basically sold the fuel based on the weight, and there is no accurate way to measure how much fuel is in the underground tanks except to measure how deep the fuel is. If you've ever seen the gas truck delivery driver, they have a long pole that they slide down into the tanks to get a 'guesstimate' of how much fuel is in it before they begin pumping. It would be simple to steal 50-100 gallons a shift without stirring any suspicion. I know this becuase a former co-workers less than honest husband drove a fuel truck, and kept several 55 gal drums at their rural home. He could fill a 55 gal drum up a day without anyone noticing. He could actually steal more fuel than he even needed to run both of their vehicles, motorcycles, powerboat, jetski's, etc. I wondered for a long time how they could not only afford all those toys (in debt up to their ears!), but how they could keep them running. She filled me in on it, and basically told me that was one of the perks to being a gas delivery driver! She said that even his supervisor knew, and he even 'delivered' him some fuel from time to time. A long story, but that's how I know that the amount of fuel in a gas stations underground tanks are anything but accurate.

In 1961, a young standup comic named Pat Harrington, Jr. did a comedy bit about exactly that. The car was called a "Muggabroots", and he told about adding gas and getting the neighbor to brag about his mileage, then siphoning gas out and getting the neighbor to take his car into the shop.

Not gonna work in any practical sense. Within hours the lead would be emitting its own radiation. I'm not going on record saying it is impossible to sneak a nuke or dirty bomb int a populated area, but it's a lot harder than you might think. And it would require a lot of luck.

My money would be on the gasoline truck, or some conventional chemical attack. Consider how paranoid we've become about hazordous waste. PCBs would put us out of business for weeks.

domestic anti-American movements? Methinks the two conventions will harken back to Chicago '68, and end up hurting the Dems..

I disagree. Why on arth would they want to kill Democrats, proestors or Michael Moore? That would have been akin to them targeting the Spanish Left in Madrid on 3/11. The left are their allies.

They are killing fellow Muslims. Did they check how many of their friends were in the Twin Towers? No, they want to kill us because we are Americans and are part of decadent Western culture. They want all of us dead. I guess their attitude is --- kill them all and let Allah sort them out.

Certainly at least one dirty bomb will go off in Fleet Center. It's the Democratic Convention which will be as dirty as it gets.
